I'm not sure why Naomi's thread on Face Masks has been closed but I was going to add that I agree with Naomi that there is a case for wearing one in supermarkets (and of course on trains, in taxis and even when passing someone on a narrow pavement), especially as some have said the 2m figure is not necessarily sufficient (eg if someone sneezes) and perhaps should be up to 8m. ) But although it can help it's certainly not guaranteed to protect you- it should really be supplemented by eye protection and complete face/head covering and gloves- and the masks need to be changed fairly frequently

no the evidence is that they dont work - we have known this for fifty years - OK they do if you use them as hankies or bandanas ( to rob banks of course)

Hi PP.
I was trying (but clearly not clearly enough) that a mask on its own is of limited benefit as a way of avoiding infection from someone who coughs/breathes/sprays while talking close to you - limited because at best it can stop droplets going straight up your nose- so what you'd really need is to wear eye protection and complete head protection and gloves since you want to stop droplets getting in your eyes and onto your face and hands.
After all, that's what they do in hospitals- they wear proper PPE- or at least they want to if they can get it.
To say "no the evidence is that they dont work - we have known this for fifty years" begs the question why NHS staff and carers are demanding PPE including masks

Masks are also very handy as they can be discarded on a whim onto the street, into a hedge.or over a wall so no need to look for a suitable bin.

Yes, that's because they have become a bit of a fashion statement among the youths who drive fast cars and meet up to sniff their N2O canisters and use other substances before zooming off.

Yes, Zacs. I said the same thing about 30 minutes ago. For the record I've no intention of using them- far better to avoid any situations where you might be at risk (unless you are a carer/NHS worker)- but if you need to pop to the local shop I don't see any harm in wearing one- might have a small benefit to others and a tiny benefit to yourself if you follow the same practices NHS staff follow

and the interview with paul cosford - director of PHE ( the govt testing lab) -oh god do you have any idea of what my life is like?

Well you didn't do the right tests then did you? Try blowing a candle out while wearing a mask and see how far away you are effective. These viruses are propelled through the air they don't float through the air, and if you affect the force of propulsion you affect the distance they will travel. Medical students!

I like the idea of going on doing experiments until you get the result you want - soviet science there !

You really need to get yourself more acquainted with tests that have been done on masks, and not rely on those done with your mother-in-law. Here's the results of one, but I am sure there are many more available.

PP- it seems to me medical opinion is shifting. There are medical experts who do not seem to share your view that they are a waste of time.

I saw some professor or something similar in UK saying today there is a case now for the public to wear them.
They also say though that scarves or other face coverings can be just as effective for the public.
I think the tide of opinion may be changing and WHO may review their guidance.
Maybe we should revisit this topic in a week or so
