Good morning,i`ve received a letter from government that i`m vulnerable to effects of the virus as i have existing illnesses,i`m having trouble getting home deliveries though have managed to get some in a few weeks time,i read i ca get a free box of food delivered from Gov.uk i looked on website but can`t work out if i need to register or i`m automatically on the list as i got the at risk letter ?

I have been an online customer with Tesco and with Asda for many years but they are not prioritising their existing customers, nor even customers with evidence of vulnerability, such as the letter we have received. Sainsburys won't let me register for home delivery because I am not an existing customer. Both my daughters work in the health service and I am reluctant to add to their burdens and increase their exhaustion by asking them to shop for me. I am disgusted at the attitude of Tesco and Asda.

"We know that it’s difficult right now to get a delivery slot for online shopping. We’re at full capacity for the next few weeks, so if you’re able to shop in-store safely instead of booking a delivery, it would be a great help. This will allow us to start freeing up more slots for the more vulnerable.
We’re looking at every opportunity to increase the number of slots available. [i]As we increase our capacity, we’ll also set aside more of these slots for our most vulnerable customers[i]"

"The UK Government has identified over a million people in England who have conditions that make them extremely vulnerable to coronavirus (COVID-19) and have advised them to self-isolate for 12 weeks to protect themselves. We have been working closely with the DEFRA and some of our fellow supermarkets for the last couple of weeks to understand how to ensure essentials reach those with no support network. The data we’ve received from the UK Government has allowed us to email our customers to offer first access to delivery slots, ensuring they get what they need while they stay safe at home. We’re also working on similar programmes for customers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland."

I'm in the 'highly vulnerable' group (due to ongoing chemotherapy) but I'm still doing my own shopping. I'm simply limiting my shopping trips to one every two or three weeks and choosing to use only supermarkets where (through having wide aisles, etc) social distancing is easy to maintain. After three hours of chemo at Ipswich Hospital last Thursday, I drove straight to Waitrose (where they've got really wide aisles and only allow about 10 customers in the store at any one time) and did enough shopping to hopefully see me through the next few weeks.

MIL got one of those letters about a week ago and had to register herself online, today she has an email from Sainsburys saying she has been identified as a vulnerable customer and inviting her to book a slot, she has one for Friday now which is not bad.

In our area there are also lots of smaller outlets offering home delivery. Green grocers and farm shops are all out and about busy delivering boxes of fresh food. Try look on the website of your local paper for a list. Also contact your local council, or check thier wensite as they have volunteers in all areas ready to do shopping for vulnerable people.

Hi everyone. I hope you are all doing OK. I was talking to a Tesco driver about two days ago and he said that if you get a letter, you need to phone your nearest Tesco and they will put you on the urgent list and you will then be able to do online purchases as a priority. I hope that is true and that it helps. I know this is working with Tesco in Hereford.
This is a section of an email I received from Tesco.
Last Thursday, we were given an initial list of 110,000 clinically vulnerable and isolated people by the Government. From this list, we were able to match 75,000 existing customers – and we’ve already let them know we’re making home delivery slots available to them immediately. We’ll continue to work through this list, and, as we receive more data from the Government, we’ll make even more slots available.

I think I will do as Carakeel has suggested and phone Tesco tomorrow to see what I have to do to get a slot.
