People could be offered testing for virus and come up negative. How can anyone be sure they are not positive a week later or a day later.

They can't.
They can't. They could become infected on the way home. What it does mean if you have a cough or cold and test negative you can go back to work
I can't see the point either. Get tested one day ,negative result but get the virus day after .
You can have a test for most problems and it be negative, and then a little down the line be positive. With this problem only a vaccine is going to help stop the spread in the long run.
But if you test positive it's useful . if you test negative at least you know your symptoms are not covid
It's the same issue as whether to test people who fly into our airports. that's even more difficult though as when the results come through a few days later you may not be able to find them
These tests are for essential workers who think that they may have the virus so that they don't risk infecting anyone at their workplace.
