Haemochromatosis And Vitamin Tablets
15 Answers
Haemochromatosis is a condition in which excess iron in the body can be deposited throughout leading to various complications. The usual treatment for severe cases is to have blood taken from time to time.
Does anyone know if it's okay for someone with the condition to take vitamins, food supplements etc. which contain some iron in them?
Obviously the less iron intake the better if you have haemochromatosis, but can the extra benefits of vitamins outweigh the slight rise in iron levels, or perhaps the absorption rate doesn't affect the symptoms.
I would appreciate any information.

I presume that you have a definitive diagnosis of haemochromatosis.
You should avoid taking iron containing supplements. If you must take supplements and you cannot find one that doesn't contain iron, then so be it, take the iron containing supplement as the amount of iron is small and shouldn't do you much, if any, harm.

I don't necessarily have to take them but just think perhaps it's healthier to take one a day.
Yes sqad, I have been diagnosed but I'm at the lower end of the scale, down at 60 where others can be up in the thousands.
I get checked on the levels monthly, so perhaps I'll try taking them and if my level rises, just stop them then.

These kind of odd things on AB irritate me. Tashi gets to say reported and then never comes back to say why (surely it was an error). Even flobadob didn't say anything about why although it was posted within a minute. And then it just sits there...
I'm quite sure if I'd said reported a lot more people would have tackled me about it.

Prudie, I rely don't think that people take AB as, seriously as one did and it is now so inconsequential as a serious site for accurate information that one couldn't care less about replies or th lack of them.
I was at one time concerned about the atitude of members to the site but it no longer troubles me however you do make a relevant point in your post.
