I read that you should always shave in the direction of growth, i.e. down one's face. I think that's bull - that just flattens the hairs doesn't cut them as short. What is "correct"?
In the olden days of brush, soap-lather and razor-blades fathers generally taught their sons - by example, if nothing else - to lather and shave downwards and then re-lather and shave upwards. In other words, shave in both directions. Finally, feel for areas that are still 'rough' and shave them them 'against the grain' to finish off.
Best results for me have been to shave down on the face towards the chin, and then up on the neck area, again towards the chin. Any rough patches, shave "against the grain" as quizmonster mentioned
yup quizmonster is right
