Mums Legs Bad Again

Following on from my previous post regarding my Mums legs, she still having problems.

After me pestering the GP several times he said maybe it was a blood clot and to take her to A&E!
It was very frightening for us both but they did heart scans, and scanned her leg to check for clots but fortunately found nothing.
They sent her home with antibiotics to clear up any infection there might be.

Well, the leg is still swollen but now has a couple of scab like things one of which is now bleeding.

I just dont know what to do, the GP doesn't seem bothered and the hospital cant really find anything, where do we go from here?

If these scab like things were not there when you last went to the A&E then I would get her back down there, Darcey.

Ring 111, they’ve been really helpful on the three occasions I havee rung then during lockdown.

Not seen your earlier post, but has your mom had any other problems such as night sweats, fever, ear/eye/nose infection, weight loss, gum infection, boils/pustules or joint pain? If she’s had any of these in the last few months she may be suffering from a rare disease called Vasculitis. Visit Vasculitis.org.uk for more info and/or ask her GP to get her tested for this initially it will be a blood test but may also need urine test & skin biopsy for further investigation. I hope this helps . I have no idea how I landed on this website and have just signed up to give this response. As someone who was to-ing & fro-ing for over a year before getting diagnosed I understand your frustration. I hope this response is useful and your mum gets the help she needs.

Interesting post by Anythought and clearly supported by online links.
Vasculitis a possible diagnosis in the case of your Mum, but to put it into context,there are many types of Vasculitis and it is indeed rare.......I'm a general practice of 3,500 patients are doubt whether the doctor would see more than one case in his whole medical career, it is that uncommon. Your mother would have had blood tests which would have suggested such a diagnosis.
From what you have said in previous posts, a blood clot was never a realistic diagnosis.
Cellulitis sounds to be a likely cause and can lead to blistering which scab and can be difficult to treat.
Continue the antibiotics and reassess the situation in one weeks time.
Epaderm cream which can be bought over the counter massaged into the legs twice daily would help to moisturise the skin and is a useful antibacterial cream.
I,m afraid that mum is going to have to deal with this, despite treatment for many weeks if not months.

Hi Sqad thank you for your comments. I was speaking from experience. Despite several blood tests at my GP I wasn’t diagnosed until I was referred to rheumatologist. But you’re absolutely right, Vasculitis is very rare and mimics so many other conditions which is why it’s hard to diagnose. I’m glad you can give more clarity from a professional point of view.

My mum didn't have Vasculitis, but her legs used to swell due to heary failure.
I was always advised to put a pillow under her feet, as the elevation helps to reduce the swelling.
She was also given a diuretic, which unfortunately made her visit the toilet more often, but it did help with swellings.
