Visit To A&E Yesterday

Had to take Little Tiggs to A&E yesterday. Over the last few months since lockdown he has been bleeding when going to the toilet and has had some tummy aches every now and again. Our GP prescribed movicol in June which he was taking reluctantly due to the taste. Everything seemed to go back to normal, although there was still a bit of bleeding, until Wednesday night when he went to the loo and there was quite a lot of fresh blood coming out. I was quite worried and rang the GP first thing yesterday. She referred us straight to A&E.

Blood tests were done and they ruled out all inflammatory things like crohns and colitis. The paediatrician said there was nothing to worry about and that it was due to constipation and straining. He's never had this problem and is usually regular. He eats plenty of fruit and veg and has always got a bottle of water with him wherever he is which I fill up.

But what causes so much bleeding? As I said this has been going on for a few months now.

Did they said it could be a fissure?

If he is straining and/or his stools are hard then the fresh blood could be from an anal tear - they bleed very easily and can sometimes be slow to heal.

Keep up the hydration and fresh fruit and veg.

How old is little tings? When I was nursing we had a child come in to hospital with the same thing. She had swallowed a bristle from a toy broom and it was causing bleeding. When you clean his butt is there blood on the paper/wipe. Can you get a stool sample and take to doctor?

He's 10. He usually wipes himself but because of the bleeding I've been doing it and there was a lot in the toilet and on the toilet paper.

They didn't mention anything about fissures.

The brightness of the blood is key, it's very likely to be a small tear, go back to GP if your efforts don't improve things.

It was bright red and fresh although there was some dried blood a while ago.

Some dried will have sat in the rectum a while.

The biggest worry apart from excessive bleeding of course is very dark or almost black bloody leakage - that would be coming from higher up.

Maybe ask about a stool softener if he struggles with the Movicol.

The paediatrician said the same. If it continues with the movicol, to go back to GP. Hope it doesn't!

The Paediatrician has given you a perfectly reasonable explanation for the rectal bleeding with which,based on your post,I would concur.
Fissures of the anus are predominantly painful and on you descriptions this is not a starter.
Why do you think that the amateur medica of ABcan be of further assistance?

Thanks Mamy. It's just a worry when you see so much blood. He was crying as well and was too scared to go to the toilet at one point and holding it in :o(

As adults we can deal with it but for children it can be upsetting. He was scared of the blood.
