to get a full nights sleep
I have been waking up to 5 times a night for over a month or more.

i have no problem going to sleep, its just after two hours im awake, feeling as though i was suffocating. Any physical reasons for this.

anyone else care to share their sleepless tales. and how they may have conquered them. I have spoken with doctor but she seems to
think it might be nasal drip, causing me to cough, though i don't know if that is right.
bad dreams, needing the loo all come into play as well.

Have you tried a cup of chamomile tea about 45 mins before you go to bed.

dont like tea of any kind. Especially not the flowery kind
emmie, sometimes we go through a phase of having different sleep patterns. At the moment, I'm having difficulty getting to sleep, and when I do sleep, I seem to be having one dream after another, waking up between each dream, then when it's time to get up, I feel like I haven't had any sleep at all. There have been a few nights lately when I haven't had any sleep at all and it's difficult to get through the day. What I would like to do is get into a routine of going to bed at the same time every night and getting up at the same time every morning. Do you think that is something you could try?
Question Author
i do have a routine, dinner, watch bit of tv, go to bed to sleep.

But wake soon after, often from bad dreams, some have been horrendous, don;t have any alcohol, or caffeine at night, so don;t know what has sparked this latest bout.
I used to get this type of thing and then doctors found out I had sleep apnea. After putting me on an APAP machine it more or less stopped.
Question Author
i wondered at that too - but this is fairly recent.
Wife complained that I snored a lot and used to stop breathing for a long time, then wake up as I was so short of breath then doctors found out I had severe sleep apnea.
Question Author
i have untold sympathy for anyone who has this problem

I was going to suggest sleep apnea also after reading that you wake with a start.
I'd really suggest you mention that to your doctor.
Question Author
thanks pasta, i also often wake drenched in sweat, its why i have often kicked off the covers, the flat doesn't have central heating but is well insulated for all that, and often the rooms are too warm.
Question Author
i will.
I have terrible insomnia and do think it comes with age. My friend who also has insomnia call going to bed the "bed-dread". You get wound up before going to bed, going through everything in your mind that you can't sleep.

I see that you can get over to sleep but then wake up. I'm the opposite it could take hours to get over.

I do think emmie, going to bed at 9.00 is not good. It's far too early. I know you are tired at that time but could you stave until 11.30, this would perhaps help you.

You don't want to take medication for it and I don't know what more your GP can do. It is awful for insomniacs because for myself when I get up next morning - I'm exhausted.

Em, once again you have ignored calmck @ 15.03 who has recommended Melatonin. You ignored him/her and also me the last time we both recommended it. Several others have also recommended it on AB. Our bodies make melatonin which helps us to sleep but as we get older we make less of it so this can be part of the reason why some struggle with insomnia. You can buy it from Biovea.co.uk and it's not expensive. A 1mg capsule does it for me but each to suit themselves. Oh and BTW, drinking coffee is not helping as it is a stimulant. And finally Em, you appear to have ignored all the advice suggesting you go to bed later than before 9pm. Look at it this way. Say you did get your desired 6 hours sleep that would take you to latest 3am. Why would you want to be getting up in the dark at 3am? Sorry, another finally, some exercise and fresh air would do you much better than nodding off, ordering stuff online and grumbling about your lack of sleep on AB.
Please don't be upset by this message, it's meant kindly. I am truly trying to help you. What have you got to lose by giving the above a try Em? You might find you feel a little less depressed, I do hope so.
And I hope you don't dismiss it as you are wont to do.
