What's the best food to give a child after several hours of vomiting? (Bug related sickness not food poisoning)

Glucose or porridge is fine. Don't give the child things that are too starchy or in your opinion, too hard to digest.
Something a bit bland. I always started off with just a piece of toast to see if they could keep that down.

plain, boiled rice, perhaps with just a dash of olive oil.

I would say plain boiled rice too, and plain toast. I would avoid sugars personally and of course keep on with frequent sips of cooled boiled water
oh and forgot to say, don't hang around changing all the beds and trying to get everything dry if he has been sick in bed. Take all the sheets, and everyone elses to the launderetter, get her to wash and dry them and then you don't get behind on your laundry aswell as sitting with a sick child.

I know this is unrelated to the question, but IMO a high priority issue

Hope you are feeling better soon littl'un
as recommended by a GP plain crisps and ginger ale. plain, likely to be eaten and with sugar and salt to ensure absorption
PS sorry, that is for children over 5 years only, too salty for the under fives

Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately daughter still throwing up so haven't tried any of the suggestions yet!

Woofgang. I never eat crisps or drink coke - don't really like either, but when I have been sick they are the first thing I fancy (also toast and Marmite). Is that the body telling me what I should eat?

Have to agree with woofgang. When my child was 2 she was ill for 7 months until a private doctor discovered what was wrong. She couldn't eat and was so thin. Crisps and coke were recommended and did the job until real food could be tolerated. Obviously it wasn't for months.
Toast with no butter dont give them milk or yoghurt based foods it will make it worse
its weird isn't it how effective the fizzy drink and crisps thing can be in the right circumstances. The GP I got the tip from says ginger ale instead of coke because the caffeine content in coke, while not harmful in moderation, can affect sleep
