Couple of days ago I heard a horrible roar outside
I looked out and saw that it was my neighbour starting up.her car .

I thought to myself , her exhaust has blown , but even so the roar was louder than a blown exhaust .

Anyway , she told me today ,that some theiving bar steward had taken off the catalytic converter .

I ask you ?

Can you account for your movements and have you got an alibi , mamy ?
I read an article about stolen cats a couple of weeks ago. It only made sense when I realised that it wasn't the head of the household that had been stolen, but a catalytic converter.
I can,, and I have the photographs too.
its big business now, i watched a piece on the news, and saw home video of a cars catalytic converter being torn out, quick as you like.
they're smuggled to China, where they're considered a great delicacy at restaurants.
We had one stolen off a pick up truck from under our bedroom window. Apprently you can get over £500 scrap for the stuff thats inside them.
Pretty common I'm afraid & they for scrap they fetch a mere fraction of what they cost to replace.

If possible park in well lit areas & against kerbs/walls/other vehicles that will make getting under your car more difficult.

Yes bar stewards the lot of 'em & probably Ps to boot.
"Apprently you can get over £500 scrap for the stuff thats inside them"

I think that's a wild exaggeration!
You can get £500 but not from one cat

So. what's inside them that people are buying?
Catalytic converters are made of a metal cylindrum containing a ceramic piece in its core. The ceramic monolith has a honeycomb structure which contains the valuable metals, including copper, nickel, cerium, iron and manganese.
They've stopped doing manhole covers then?
and iron road signs & railway signalling wires.
// I think that's a wild exaggeration!//

Best take that one up with Durham Constabulary Dave cos thats what we were told. And perhaps look up the price of cerium.
the metals are more valuable than those indicated

platinum, palladium, vanadium and rhodium....
I guess to buy a used cat from a scrapper would be less than £200, to replace one with new would be £800 +
Dave, they are not selling the cat converter as scrap -they are taking out the precious metals and selling those.
