Coughs are either productive ( sputum) or non productive (harsh or barking). If it is the former then you need an expectorant to loosen the phlegm but if it is the latter then you need a suppressant.
All evidence suggests that cough medicines are useless.
Many cough medicines contain both expectorant and suppresant........work that out lol.
Also many cough medicines are sedatives e,g Berlin and that may help the cough....may help.
Give them a try, but don't expect much in return.
If the Carbocisteine isn't helping loosen things up then mention it to your GP Woodelf, there may be an alternative.

"Benylin".........don't mention the war.?-;)
I see that I have only answered part of your question.
What is your underlying condition?
Are you trying to suppress you cough or loosen it.
If you are trying to loosen it then Carbocysteine might help, but if you are trying to suppress it then Ibuprofen 400mgms is as good as anything.

Ve haff ways of making you cough...but I won't mention dum - not only for dumbarton, but dumkopf!...next week, I'm in the Tower!.....and I don't mean Blackpool!...Many Thanks though Sqad, my cough is the former, with a little of the latter too, but I can't risk being drowsy! The Carbos Mamya have been discussed up hill and down dale with GP and Thoracic dept and dosages amended l, r and c, so too my inhalers, but I still rattle on, quite literally!...so I don't know what to do next - Big Wavy Smiles!
"Big wavy smiles " ??
O.K then it is either Carbocysteine or you could suggest...very casually Guafenesin.
There you go Woodelf, that's an alternative you could ask about if the Carbo isn't working.

Good luck.

My underlying condition(s) are COPD, COAD, possibly Bronchiectasis and Pseudomonas Aeruginosa. As well as Carbocisteine, I use a Trelegy Ellipta inhaler. It seems the Guafenesin is the main constituent of expectorants and as you don't seem to reckon them...I'm thinking of a Bronchoscopy, but until then, maybe, I'm on the lookout for Pulmonary Rehab and Physiotherapy, the latter at the hospital in September!
LOL.thanks for the feedback.
