My cholesterol was 6.1 and my GP spoke to me about going on statins.
I asked him to give me 3 months to try to reduce it by diet, and this is what I've done so far.
Changed semi skimmed milk to skimmed.
Stopped eating cheese, cream, butter.
Drinking a Benecol yogurt drink everyday.
Eating oats and nuts everyday.
Do you think this will do the trick and is there something else I could be doing?
Please don't mention exercise as it isn't an option. TIA.

Apart from the yogurt, oats and nuts what else do you eat?
do you eat meat?
Diet is questionable in reducing your cholesterol levels.
6.1 wouldn't bother me.
You need to know the levels of your HDL and LDL as some cholesterol is good and some bad.

In your situation I would not do more than you are doing as far as diet is concerned/
Ah!......the mandatory websites, what would we do without the internet?
Mine has always been about 6.4, but Dr told me I had more HDL than LDL, worked out about 4.1. So wasn't worried.
Some antidepressants will send cholesterol readings up. That's what happened in my case.
Try a reduction in fats though, can only help.
SQAD, what's up, do you not appreciate other sources of information and advice being given?
Isn't recent research finding that dietary cholesterol has no impact on blood cholesterol? That reducing dietary cholesterol can cause the body to just manufacture more.
Maybe I'll find a link ;)

bednobs, I forgot about meat. Yes I usually do eat meat but just lately I've only been eating chicken and fish but, after watching a programme last night about chickens, I've decided to look into buying organic.
I have oats for breakfast salad for lunch and fish and veg for evening meal.
Occasionally I have a treat i.e oven chips instead of veg and I eat fruit everyday.
My other treat that I have daily is 2 pieces of dark chocolate which I eat with the nuts.
Corby.......I do.

I think you're doing ok with that diet. I couldn't take statins as they made my legs feel like tree trunks.
If you are of a "certain" age it is difficult to drastically alter your diet and/or exercise regime. Some manage it but old habits die hard as they say. If regular medication is of proven benefit then I see no problem with it.
