This sounds horrific...and the cost! This is not the first account like this that I've read either.

jesus why didnt they go to Skeggie?
Quarantine hotels are £2285 per unit - (per person per time until neg)
it doesnt sound horrendous. People travelling at the moment are stupid f they are not aware changes could be made mid-travel.

it's not much more expensive per night than (say) a travel lodge, and one presumes it's in a premiuim close to the airport site.
If she cant afford to lose all the money she says she's losing, why go in the first place? knowing that things could change.
people just like moaning
They way the world is over reacting to the pandemic is precisely why you'd have to be completely radio to risk going anywhere unless you really had to. I certainly won't be travelling until this madness is over.
This whole situation is now completely nuts, and if it happened to me I would feel robbed of £2.000 +. The variant is already here since who knows when, the constant up date of the new variant in numbers is also pointless.
the point of the vaccine is that we can get back to normal. Politicians are terrified of being accused of not reacting. Thus they react to any crackpot with an agenda. Deaths and hospital admissions have been falling for weeks, no of cases are irrelevant, we should stop most of the testing. Omicron is barely noticeable for most. Let's get our lives back pronto.
I'd be fed up if I paying that kind of money and I was cold too, sounds poorly run.
Not sure she likes moaning, Bednobs. She wanted to see her parents who are in their nineties. A natural thing for a child, especially now. For what she is having to pay (which she is willing to do without moaning) she should have better accommodation and service.
We are not being allowed to live with covid in whatever variant but constantly saturated with it by the media, creating more stress to people who have struggled with life pre covid. This constant coverage needs to stop.
dont get me wrong, i would no doubt be moaning too if it was me (as i said, people like moaning, myself included) but to portray it as a complete surprise is crazy. firstly, it's her first day after 24 frs of travelling from a lovely time in a hot country with her family, and she's alone in a hotel in birmingham - that would try the patience of a saint. Secondly, she makes it sound like a complete surprise that Britain would be colder than SA
15.08 a little insensitive !
Incompetence personified. The sheer stupidity boggles the mind. Disorder and counter productive, volte-face and indifferent ignorance are terms so aptly applied to this sham of a government. Fifty years from now, people will not believe that such a shameful sackful of selfish self serving politicians were allowed to pretend to run our nation.
ps gness, i disagree she's willing to pay without "moaning" - that's what the whole piece is - moaning. She even says "For this, I paid £2,285"
last summer or it might have been last year there was a man wanging on about how he had to pay for hotel quarantine for his 11 year old (i think) son who'd gone to visit his mum in the half term in a red list country then had to quarantine (surprise surprise) all because they hant checked!

You are right TTT. However the fault lies with us for blaming the Government for everthing initially and its now causing over reaction. They can't win! The Covid numbers mean nothing any more and yet there are those who religiously quote them.

However, I agree with Bednobs. It would be daft to make travel arrangements unless they are vital unless you are prepared for things to change at any time and you have more money than sense.
One thing that's been proven over the last 2yrs is that a world wide pandemic, is just that, and no matter what you do you won't stop it by these sort of actions, or any other. Vaccination is the only chance you have. The rest is one big money spinner for sure.
I would consider this case vital travel however.
And the media have, as usual, stirred us up all through a covid. It's not going away. Secured to hear less about it, stay cautious where necessary and relax
'So we'. Not 'secured'

An acquaintance of mine may be in a similar situation. She's gone to SA every November for years...I think they used to own a house there. Didn't go last year, and back in September when they booked, there was no hint of this to come.
Are Travelodge hotels really 200+ per night? Aren't thry supposed to be clean, comfortable but basic? This sounds decidedly below acceptable. December and no heat? What of those travelling with children? Is the charge per room...person? What happens if you haven't got 2,000 in the bank...maybe more than the holiday cost? Just curious here.
Would anyone here willingly pay that much for substandard accommodation?
No I wouldn't find it acceptable hotel wise Pasta, but if I had very little in the bank for emergencies I wouldnt be paying out large amounts for holidays or travel in the present world climate.
Should this sort of quarantine hang over the heads of people who want to travel, or must travel continue, then the travel industry will crash. These tin-pot hotels taking this sort of money must be clapping their hands with joy.
