It’s looking very likely that other half has the beginnings of a detached retina, an emergency optician appointment in an hour will confirm or exclude this.
Has anyone had this and had it treated?
Did it involve an overnight stay in hospital?
How long before the eye recovered?
Any other info would be very gratefully received. Thank you.

Now if your OP was about a cataract I could have helped you, in graphic detail;-) As it isn't the best I can do is this from UK NHS site but it should help.

Vagus - sorry to digress from your post.

Ladybirder - how are you doing now - is your sight good?
Wooooow! steady on.

It has to be diagnosed first and after that what type of surgery is tailormade for that particular tear.

If operation is needed, it will probably be done as a day case.

No I haven't had a detached retina.
Excuse me Vagus please while I answer jj.

Thanks for asking jj. The sight in one eye is brilliant, everything is clear and shining, but the eye is still slightly uncomfortable. Through the other eye all is a dull yellowy colour. My specs of course now don't suit the operated eye but I need to wear them. Will be so good when both eyes are fixed. xx
thanks LB

Not long home.
He has a partially detached retina (retinal tear)which will require surgery. The eye dept at the local hospital closed at 4.30, 15 minutes before the optician finished the tests. The optician will get in touch with the hospital first thing tomorrow, hospital will call us and arrange for him to go in tomorrow to have the op. Optician also said if symptoms change then go straight to a&e.
Nothing we didn’t expect to be honest, and very glad it will be sorted tomorrow. Will have to decide if our week away in a cottage starting next Saturday will be ok to go ahead.
You never quite know what’s round the corner :/
Feedback much appreciated.

...as are you, Sqad ;)
LOL.

Hey, don’t laugh, it’s true...
I really, really, REALLY, enjoyed reading all the things you said on the other thread. I’d like to ask more but feel it too personal for AB.
I was never clever enough to be a doctor but my one serious regret is not doing nurse training, I was more than capable of it, circumstances weren’t, which would have lead to all sorts of opportunities. Some of our children have gone on to do stuff in a similar vein, which pleases me greatly.
Go Sqad, go Sqad... :o)

LOL.....ask what you like Vagus, in my day one didn't have to be clever only exceptional at sport to get into the prestigious London Teaching Hospitals.

It was always quoted in the professions that London medical students were the cream of the profession........rich and thick.
I had a detached retina, had an op which wasn’t successful. After the second op I had to spend two weeks face down, 15 hours a day, to keep the retina in place. Both times I was in hospital 2 nights. This was nearly 20 years ago so procedures have probably changed.

Crikey boto, that must have been very difficult for you. I hope your sight is/was ok?
OH went in a taxi to a&e about two hours ago as his symptoms have slightly worsened so rather than wait for someone to get in touch with him, he’s done what the optician told him to do yesterday.
It’s now a waiting game..
Thanks Vagus, it wasn’t very good and at the time it seem like months. I rigged up a mirror so I could see the TV upside down and had talking books. Hope your oh gets sorted soon.
The face down treatment is very hard to manage. I had that for macular hole a few years back but I was able to hire a piece of equipment to rest my head in during the day and take to bed at night to do the same job.

He just got home.
It was done by laser, fortunately not completely detached as that would have meant a different more complicated op. Follow up appointment in two weeks.
His sight is fine now, no lights or blobs but he’s been told he could experience some differences for a day or two as the laser treatment settles.
Can’t fault the NHS for his treatment, I doubt it would have been done much/any quicker privately.
Well taken Witherspoon.
Glad it's all over and again great to have feedback.
That is great news, you both must be relieved
Well that's good to read and excellent treatment it seems.

So is the holiday still on?
Question Author
I posted originally looking for information about it, I really wasn’t looking for sympathy or anything, but I do appreciate all your kind wishes.
Yes, it is a great relief, and yes, I seems our week away will go ahead. Phew!
Thanks again x
