7 Answers
Hi there? I am due to go for a dental crown on Tuesday as it's a front tooth and I dont want to lose it. I have never had a crown before what is it like? I'm a nervous wreck about the dentist anyway and have to take a few valium before I go. It is over 2 appointments lasting 30 minutes each.

I've had the same crown in place for over 30 years and not had any trouble with it.
It's nothing to worry about - just a covering over your own tooth. Your tooth will be made healthy by removing any decay and shaped to take the crown. It is painless but your jaw might ache if you have to keep it open for any length of time.
A cast will taken to make the crown.
On the second visit the crown will be cemented in to place, again painless

My tooth wasn't cut off at gum level - it is like this one under the crown https:/ /my.cle velandc linic.o rg/heal th/trea tments/ 10923-d ental-c rowns
It'll be great once it's done - I have 3 and they are indistinguishable from my other teeth and t.b.h. I have to think before I can say which they are. Your 1st appt will probably involve taking a mould of your existing tooth so another can be made.
Altogether, it's a longish procedure, but relax. They'll then drill a lot of your existing tooth off (it's painless) and fit a temporary cap to see you through until the next appt. - where they will check for fine detail of fitting and cement new tooth on to old stump. Done!
