Flowers stink to high heaven when they have been in water a while. I'm not sure whether it's the water or the flowers rotting that does it, but it's certainly a vile smell. I once went on holiday and forget there was a vase of flowers in the living room. I opened the living room door on my return and nearly died from the stench!

Bacteria from both the flower stems and the storage water causes the smell. Next time you place cut flowers in a vase, add a teaspoon of common laundry bleach to the water (along with about a teaspoon of sugar for nourishment) and add the same amount of bleach each time you change the water to control the bacteria...

Many thanks, both of you, I was accused of causing the smell myself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If your Husband thinks old flower water dont stink, just ask him to drink it. that should settle the argument!
Yes, the rotting stalks start to stink after a few days and the water goes really slimy. I try to remember to change the water in vases every couple of days. It doesn't leave the inside of the vase looking very nice either !

Lily's that fester, smell far worse than weeds.

Make sure only stalks and not the leaves are submerged in the water.
Change the water every other day to keep the life of the flowers longer.
