When a baby is born there is usually no doubt what gender they are although there are an awful lot where that it is not clear (Lady Colin Campbell is one such and was raised a boy for some years). What I would like to know is why a check on the number of chromosomes is not the defining factor in determining whether they are male or female. Can anyone explain?

A check on chromosomes would not necessarily give a prediction about whether or not the child would at a later date wish to change gender.

Not every child who wishes to change gender has the chromosomes of the gender they wish to embrace.
For example, not every girl who wishes to transition to the male gender has an "unidentified" Y chromosome.
Many females wishing to transition to males would have the usual XX chromosome pattern seen in females, yet they still yearn to live their lives as female.
Oops. Typing error. That should be "they still yearn to live their lives as male"
Why would you Subject a baby to an unnecessary medical procedure? As you say there is usually no doubt.
"What I would like to know is why a check on the number of chromosomes is not the defining factor in determining whether they are male or female. Can anyone explain? " - don't come round here with your heretical common sense!
bednobs, a chromosome test is just a blood test, can be done safely at any age
"Why would you Subject a baby to an unnecessary medical procedure? As you say there is usually no doubt. " - why would you test a baby? there are other clues.
fine for extremely rare cases like that but usually not necessary.
