Hi Sqad, my daughter's partner came home from work yesterday and was in pain, from under his left rib, diagonally down to his groin. It felt worse this morning and tried to get emergency appointment at GP surgery. Unfortunately, it was shut, due to them all having covid...
He was told to go to an A&E walk in centre. We are waiting to hear back from him to see what's happening. Do you think it's a hernia? Hes a hard working young man ( 37), who does a lot of heavy lifting at times.

No, from your description it does not have the features of a hernia so I think that can be ruled out.
It does however seem like a muscle strain or perhaps partial tear ( similar to Nadal, the tennis player).

It doesn't sound life threatening but keep us informed

Thanks sqad. I'll keep you posted.

Only just heard from my daughter. Her partner went into a nhs walk in centre. After explaining symptoms, the first done a urine test. All fine. Then said they think the problem is with his back. Gave him some strong painkillers, and told him if it gets worse, he'll have to go and sit & wait in A&E, where they will do more tests, i.e. m.r.i scan. Said it could be a hernia...
Thanks for the feedback, I am not sure where they get the hernia from.
I still back my advice and diagnosis.

A lot of guess work I think sqad!.. :-)
Anyway, I'll let you know should anything change.
Maybe the pain in the groin sqad ?
Good point ann, but no mention of swelling or past history of swelling in the groin. Also I can't relate pain under the left rib with a hernia in the groin.

You never know;-)

No lumps or bumps, sqad. He did complain of backache when he got home.
It's a shame, he had some private work this weekend. He's a welder and refurbished some lovely black iron gates and made some, for a chap in the village and he was going to make some railings to go on top of wall too. He won't be able to now for a while. I wish he could have been sent to A&E in the first place.
Lumbar hernia?
Fatticus.......naaaah!
Don't rate that as a diagnosis.

Just a shot, friend had one some 25 years ago, never heard of anyone else ever having one.
You never know Fatticus.........you never know.
you dont have to be sent to a+e - you just walk in

^^^
Should have said, wish he'd gone straight to A& E..
he'd probably still be there now - there's just been an article on our local news about how all our local hospitals A+E have a major incident declared cause of being overwhelmed
I wonder did the pain killers work ?
Question Author
Bednobs,That's what puts people off going to A&E. One could be in there all day.
Ann, I don't know if pain killers have worked. I just texted my daughter. Think they've gone to bed. I'll ask in the morning.
hope he feels better soon patsy

Update:-
Daughter's partner feeling a lot better after 4 days rest and painkillers. Certainly not pain free but more tolerable. Told his boss at work he wouldn't be able to do any heavy lifting for a while.
I think you were right Sqad. More than likely muscle strain. Anyway, he's just going to see how it goes next few days. Hopefully, he's on the mend.
