Got the brown envelope today, at the age of 62. Have to make myself available for ten days in October. Initial reaction, bore. But then thought it might be interesting.

It probably will be a bore - get out of it, bad back (unable to sit for prolonged periods) , taking any form of anti-depressants, make something up.

It can be boring, it can be interesting...it can be harrowing (I had several days on a child sex abuse case).

You might go & not get picked. You might end up with something trivial that only takes a day or two. You might get a case where the evidence is particularly distressing or a fraud/insurance case that takes weeks & bores the pants off you.
If you are prepared for all those eventualities go for it.

ginge: To be frank I would find that terribly distressing. I'm not even sure I could cope. That said won't have a choice. God, I do hope not.

I did it once. I really enjoyed it. Try to be Foreman if you can. It's much more fun.
If you volunteer, it makes it all a bit quicker, since the first half an hour or so is taken up by everybody worrying themselves to death that they might have to do it :o)

One of my cases was a GBH. An ear-biting in a pub fracas in.........

How do they decide who gets picked for the really long cases (several weeks, months), which could be much more than 10 days?

When I was on jury service I suffered the indignity of the foreman insisting that we should send a note to the judge asking why the prosecution counsel didn’t ask one of the witnesses if she recognised the defendant at the time of the alleged offence. The judge was quite nice about it, considering!
