I have one Elderly Aunt in a care home. I have stopped seeing them because of health reasons and the fact that they live down south. My husband has a sister but she's at a distance too and although we keep in touch we haven't seen her for years. I suppose I am fond of them but only one I would call a friend.
The only people who matter to me are my daughter and her partner, and my brother and his family in the States.
There are numerous cousins, but none of them showed a bit of interest when my brother was recovering from sepsis, so they can all take a walk...I wouldn't recognize a single one of them if I met them on the street. Brother on the other hand had kept in touch. No more.

Very interesting question naomi.
Honest answer is NO!
None of my family can be considered friends.
Had friends visit me both in Psych Hospital and Prison
during difficult times.
During 4 prison times I had ONE visit from my mum.
(at the same time a visit from a GF)
During 3 psychotic hospitalisations I had ONE visit
from ONE of my sisters....
Previous to this I had been their 24/7 for (the other sister).
Visiting everyday etc, in psych hospital, looking after her kids etc.
She couldnt give a fig when I needed a bit of help myself!
I dont want to be a selfish person, but can't help
wondering why not!!
Perhaps we are all selfish by nature...
Anyway, My friends are not my family....
