Helicobacter Pylori…. One For Sqad

A course of Amoxcillin and Clarithromycin, a total of six tablets per day for a week, and still taking Lansoprazole, one a day for a few more days. Problem still persists …. Help!

I was treated for HP four times before it went. The last course of drugs were particularly gruelling.

Erythromycin, Lansoprazole and Levofloxacin (sp) for two weeks. I think I had all the side effects you could imagine. It was a nightmare.

Sometimes the HP is antibiotic resistant.

It can be a b.ugger to treat.

Complete the antibiotic regime prescribed and hope that it improves despite a bad start.
If it doesn't improve then it will be a matter of juggling with different antibiotic pairings.

it might...or it might not.

The long term effects of untreated HP are not to be trifled with, including ulcers and rarely malignant disease.

Pleas don't go down that route at this stage.

Isn’t it something you’re tested for if an ulcer is a possibility? And something which caused ulcers on the past?

I was treated for this a few years ago and had the same treatment as you. After I’d finished the medication, I still had similar symptoms but tests were negative. It took me a few months to completely overcome it. The doctor suggested that it could have been a reaction to the antibiotics having an effect on the good bacteria in the gut.

Milo, did it just go on its own or did you have to take further antibiotics??

Smurfchops, I didn’t need any more antibiotics as I had a few tests after the treatment that were all negative despite some of the symptoms persisting for a few months.

Smurfchops. It won’t go on it’s own. Please keep going at it with the antibiotics. It’s such a nasty bug that can lead to all sorts of problems.

smurfy, I have seen no reliable evidence from any reputable medical unit that probiotics have anything to offer.

My sympathies smurf. Mr.Sam was already suffering when we met in '74, ( he reckons he had had it since he was 12 +- ) it took years before we found a dr. who diagnosed HP . If memory serves me right it was in '96 or thereabouts when he took the devil antibiotics. He had a dreadful week with them, but has never looked back. So don't give up and good luck !

Smurf/ Once had an ulcer bleed and endoscopy did show Helicobacter Pylori - given Clarithromycin and Metronidazole, the latter which had to be stopped as giving me terrible hallucinations. When chatting to a nurse, she said nearly everyone in the Ward had it but they didn't know it as it wasn't causing them problems! Seems to be something which affects a lot of people but does not make them sick - hope Sqad agree!

Hazlinny...agree entirely......HP is very common and the vast majority of people who have have no symptoms.
