A month or so ago I mentioned that OH had a dark mark that had become crusty on his lower lip. You, quite rightly, told me to keep an eye on it and act if it bled etc.. Well, just after Christmas it seemed to explode into a large granular black/brown crystalline covering which rapidly covered all but half an inch of his lower lip (in less than 2 weeks)to a depth of about half an inch and extended down to the swelling of his chin. I was straight on to the GP, of course, who asked for a speed referral. It took just a bit over 2 weeks
On Monday we went to Scarborough Hosp (huge new extension being built towards the car park area by the way - I know you know the hospital) to see Mr. Brown, the MaxFacial surgeon.
At the start he seemed convinced that it was a squamous cell carcinoma (not good news on a lip) but while he was doing the biopsy he became unsure and eventually said that he'd never seen anything like it, but it wasn't like the usual S.cell tumour. In the end he took a viral sample as well as the biopsy, wondering if it could be some sort of variant on a cold sore, herpes, virus.

Now we just wait. I thought that you would be interested, given your background.

Yes Scarborough Hospital, Bridlington and Whitby played a major psrt in my life.
Well.......it didn't sound or act like a sqamous cell carcinoma and the other option was a melanoma, which it definitely isn't.
I'm afraid that i wait with interest, the result of the biopsy but do say that benign viral lesions of the lip mimicking malignant disease are very common.

Thank you for your feedback.
P.S Sqamous cell carcinoma of the lip has a good prognosis, almost 99% of cases still alive after 10years ;-)

It's such a long time that I thought I should update you, even though as yet we have no results from either biopsy or viral swab test. It's a long time.
However, the horrible encrustation has disappeared gradually, due to the application of soft vaseline and the last stitch was extracted on Tuesday, so OH is feeling a lot more comfortable.
The whole area is now quite pink and I have a horrible feeling that something is starting to reform in a spot near the corner of the lip.
It would be nice to know where we are. :)
Thanks for the update.

Your OH is in a happy place at the moment and I hope that will be confirmed by biopsy. Your "horrible feeling" is unnerving, but early days.
So far so good.
Just a suggestion, but further AB posts on this thread might be better appreciated by starting a new thread.

I'll do that. Thanks.
