Do you think that a large percentage of other people secretly enjoy others misfortunes, even when it comes to their friends? For example things like breakups, financial losses, job losses etc?

No one will ever admit to it but all too often I have seen friends etc be in a slightly better mood if I tell them bad news

There was a music star who said something interesting and I am wondering if he is right. He said that ‘people don’t like seeing you at rock bottom/having a much worse time than them but at the same time they tend to dislike and get jelous when you go higher/achieve more than them. They like you to have a little fortune but not more than them’

What do you think?

Ah yes, as Gore Vidal said:
'Every time a friend succeeds, something inside me dies'
I feel I need to put a true scenario on as I'm still not quite sure what the feelings are of a friend of mine.
We have been friends for a long time and are the same age.
I recently had a bath put in my bathroom because I sometimes fancy having a soak as well as a shower.
My friends' bathroom isn't big enough for a bath to be fitted and so instead of being pleased for me, she started saying things like, 'Why are you having a bath fitted, do you think it's worth spending that kind of money at our age, I don't ever feel the need to have a soak, I'd rather spend my money on something else, and that sort of thing.
Nobody else reacted in that way and I can't understand why she did.
So, I think she would like to have a bath installed but her bathroom isn't big enough, so why did she react this way?
Envy. She would like a bath bur cannot admit to you that she would like one
So instead of just saying the truth, she criticizes me for having one.
This is the only one of my friends that does this and I couldn't understand why.
If you've never come across that sort of friend before you've done well, barsel.
When someone is envious often they try to devalue the thing they are envious about. So it's like say when someone can't afford a certain car they then devalue it so they can give the impression that they wouldn't want it even if they could afford it.
Yeah, Jags are rubbish :)
Barry, my daughters weren't best pleased because I'm spending their inheritance but they didn't say the things my friend was saying to me.

TTT /// So it's like say when someone can't afford a certain car they then devalue it so they can give the impression that they wouldn't want it even if they could afford it.///
Is it the same though as if someone gave them the car for nothing it would be of no use to them as they can't drive.
I have a friend who goes on lots of luxurious holidays but it's not something I would do as I wouldn't get on an airplane, but I don't say, 'Not another holiday, don't you think you've had enough holidays this year
I say, hope you enjoy it, can't wait to hear about it and see the photos.
So in a way, I wish I could go to those places, but I know I can't because I won't go on a plane.
Raidergal, in answer to your question, No, not a large percentage.
I think the worst example of this behaviour I have ever witnessed was many years ago in a pub.
Two young women who I didn't know were sat at a table next to me. One of them was getting of attention from a man and when he went to the loo her friend said to her 'some men always go for the fat girls because they think they'll be grateful'.
I nearly spat my ale out.
Barsel my two have told us to spend their inheritance, they don’t want anything, which is how we take a good few holidays a year ( but we have got good life insurances ….;0))) so when the time comes they don’t have to worry
Barsel I don't know how old you are but I don't think you are young. So you may regret having a bath installed as you might not be able to get in and out of it before too long. I had to get rid of mine and had a wet room instead.
Same here LB, we got ours taken out and now have a spacious walk in shower
Invite her over to take a bath and waeltch for/hear her reaction, Barsel...
LadyB I'm the same age as Bobbi but I'm disabled with arthritis.
The bath I got is a walk-in bath, very expensive and to be honest I still have to have grab rails to help me into it even though it's only 9 inches high off the floor. Still waiting for my knee replacements.
Bobbi //Barsel my two have told us to spend their inheritance//
Wanna swap? Only joking. :-) x
Barry I once said to a friend that I didn't understand why a man I was going out with would want to go out with me and she answered, 'Perhaps he fancies a bit of rough,'
I did actually fall out with her when she said that.
Barsel , what say me and you go on holiday in this country , no plane, a couple of old birds who know how to have fun ;0)))
Good grief, Barsel, what an awful thing to say. Obviously a jealous and bitter person
