Bit embarrassing, but when I go to the loo, the poos often float and won't go down the pan when flushed, taking two or three flushes. Ok at home, but not so good at work or visiting friends. Is there anything I can take to make them go down quicker?

Change your diet, maybe?

Try holding down the flush lever as long as possible.

Or pour a large jug of water into the toilet bowl as it starts to flush so as to create a deluge.

Interesting subject!!
Hi Lankeela, Well, just consulted my Gillian McKeith book for advice! She goes on so much about poos you wouldnt believe it. But yours come under "greasy stools that wont flush" ! Greasy??? Anyhow, sprinkle linseeds on your salad or soup. or Drink 3 cups of sage tea a day.......ohhh yum, But failing that, do as Robert said and pull hard on the flush lever! Good luck!

Does it say anything about what I should sprinkle on my McDonalds LOL.

Tried a google and couldn't believe the number of sites where this subject is raised!

This has happened to me in the past, what I've done when visiting people is cover it up with lots of loo roll and leave it unflushed (when it hasn't flushed the first time) - at least it's covered, and people do tend to notice if you're flushing the loo three or four times before you come back out!

Thats what I have been doing, if it hasn't gone after a couple of goes. But there's nothing worse than going into a loo and finding a load still in there from the last occupant. Like finding the seat warm, you know they've had a long session.....

I read somewhere that you should have your hand on the handle, ready to flush as soon as it hits the water, so you at least have one flush under your belt before you stand up!

Floating poos mean you are not digesting a lot of fat. How you control this i'm not sure but thats the reason they float.

My brother once went into a restaurant and between starter and main he went to the loo. There was a floater the size of a log and he couldnt eat his meal. When he went to pay he was asked if he enjoyed his meal he said not really - go into trap 2.The manager came out and waived the bill.

Now this is believe it or not meant to make you feel better cos its the volacity of the flush which is wrong. You may have a slight prob but I have the same prob in pubs but I'm OK at home.I sometimes use a wad of toilet roll on top and the weight helps it on its way..

floating poos are a sign of a good high fibre diet. do you know how long it has taken me to get to the diet where my poos float? i watch them every time. bizarre answer, bizarre question
For the immediate problem - tear off six sheets, fold them in half, reach down and carefully lay them on top of the water. Let them soak up the water, then flush, they should take the stool down with them.
Scrumpy is right, floating poos mean that you have a good healthy high fibre diet, you should be proud of yourself not emarrassed!
yes, put more paper on top and let it soak in - I presume this presents a broader target to the waterfall, making it easer for the contents to flush away. Happens to me occasionally (and I believe most people) and is undoubtedly diet-related, though not often enough to make it worth my while figuring out exactly what part of my diet.
In desperation sometimes I've had to lift the offending stool out(mine) and wra in toilet paper and then it flushes away - horrible but at least it's gone. Thoroughly scrub hands afterwards.
put some extra toliet paper in the loo, this will cover it as it flushes and pulls the poo down with it, just an idea and not an experience!
attack it with the bog brush!!

It's a diet problem, you need more..... Iron.

Then they'll sink!

Floating stools can also be a sign of wheat/glutan intolerence or coeliac disease. You could try a wheat/gluten free diet you might even feel better for it. I had to switch to this diet last year, I have since lost 3 inches all over my hips, thighs and waist without changing anything else at all and feel so much better for it and have no IBS at all. Floating stools shouldn't really be ignored if they are always like that, esp if as one other AB has already said they are also greasy looking and pale in colour.

Also, my dietician told me that stools float because of fat content in them and thus is a sign of malabsorption, but can also simply be because they are full of air. Do you find you have alot of flatulence? If so, (and you don't need to answer, hehehe) you could try avoiding typically air inducing foods such as sprouts, beans etc.....

Hope you manage to sort it soon, it must be a nightmare for you. I really feel for you.
