three year old suffering with pain in knee

my three year old has been complaining of pain in his knee on and off now for a while which i had always put down to growing pains but lately he has been complaining a lot more and on a few occasions has woke up through the night clutching his knee and sobbing his heart out theres even times when iv picked him up from nursery that he's been crying for me to carry him cos its hurting.It was only in right but now he says his left hurts to I took him to doctors this morning and she couldnt feel anything wrong and theres never been any swelling she is going to refer us to hospital my question is tho has anyone ever experienced this ?and any clues what it could be? could it just be growing pains?

I would have thought not. Even if it is, it's making your child cry, and that's good enough reason to get it properly checked out.

Possibly arthritis. It's possible for kids to suffer from it too. Take a look at this site here for more information.

A friend of mine at Mothers and Toddlers had a similar problem with her wee boy who is nearly 4. Turned out it was caused by a virus he'd caught. He'd had a bit of an upset tummy, was vomiting, and had a wee bit of a temp. However, the knee problem only arose after the other symptoms had cleared up. His knee eventually cleared up, tho he had a slight limp for a couple of weeks even after the pain seemed to disappear. Sorry, but I can't remember what (if any) treatment he got for his knee. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon so your wee guy will feel better. Good luck.

It does sound like it's something that needs to be properly checked out. Push for the hospital appointment sooner rather than later, and don't let them fob you off. Don't let it lie until they come up with an explaination.

I had bad knees as growing pains (although I still have them at 30!) but that started at about 12.

It does sound like it could be arthritis, but don't panic, you need the doctors to do their bit before you can find the best way to help him.

my son suffered from pains in his legs for 2 or 3 years when he was younger not all the time but some nights they would wake him up he saw drs and they could never find anything wrong with him it was always worse if he had been doing pe or games at school we could be sure he would wake up crying thankfully they became less as he got older so i suppose they must have been growing pains hopeyour little boys turn out to be the same but the hospital will be able to reassure you by the way my son is now 28 and stands at 6ft 3in so they didnt stop him growing Ruthxx

I had pains in my legs as a child on a regular basis - also more prevalent after exertion. In my case it was mainly in my shins and calves. I grew up to the ripe old age of 40 without any problems related to this but now my 6 year old daughter also wakes up in the night with pains in her lower legs, especially after PE.

As it is your child's knees it is worth checking for arthiritis as this can develop at a very young age but as the doc couldn't feel anything I wouldn't worry excessively.

Hi IMy son has had screeming knee pains since he was 1 1/2 years old he is now nearly 3! I fully understand and can relate to you on this topic. his left knee is his worst but his right knee gets pain too. he is under an orthopedic specialist and a rhumatologisit they both put it down to growing pains! but i did home research to find he may be developing what my husband and mother in law suffer from its called "OsGood Schlatter Disease" look it up on the net. his pains are during the day and night. because he is so active. i am seeing his pedeatrician today so may find out more. he also has and immune deficiency and reflux. good luck webby27 in your search for an answer is not nice seeing a child in pain all the time.

hi there, this sounds exactly like my 3 yr old, wont walk anywhere, always complaining of a sore knee, and wakes screaming in night, have you seen the hospital yet. let me know how you get on.

My 3yr old son is going through the same issue right know. he's been have these pains on and off since he started to walk. He just took an xray on Wednesday 7/1/09 and they did not see anything. Due to office issues at his PCP. I am moving him to a new doctor which he is visiting on Tuesday 7/7. I will discuss ths further with her. I am concern as he always cry his knee hurt and I too have to carry him. He is a playful child and I don't want this to affect him later on. Help! anyone has answers????

My 2 year old little boy had been crying with pain off and on in his right knee for about 3 months. There was never any swelling or fever. When it got bad enough he would limp or crawl. I had xrays of his knee and ankle done but the orthopedic I was taking him to told me as long as there wasn't any redness or swelling I shouldn't worry about it.

A couple weeks later he was up all night crying and screaming with pain so I got up the next morning and took him back to his pediatrician...we eventually ended up in the ER at a Children's Hospital 2 hours from home due to this. After a simple xray of his HIP one of the PEDIATRIC orhtopedics diagnosed him with "Legg Calve Perthes Disease"

I am glad I persisted and found out what was wrong with my little man. IF your child is limping at all take him to a PEDIATRIC orthopedic and find out why!

Any one have joy in getting answers. This sounds like my 3 year old boy too. He has been complaining of his knee hurting since he could talk, mostly at night initially but now also in the day when he will say he can't walk (or sometimes play) because his knee hurts too much. He also has starting limping which I thought was his shoes but they've been checked and his feet measured again and are fine so I'm beginning to think maybe both are related. Thanks all for your help.
