Has anyone tried a teeth whitening treatment that has worked? Something like a kit from boots, not an expensive dentist treatment.

I havent actually tried one but I've heard bad reports across the board. Apparently they are very abbraisive to the tooth enamel and while they may whiten slightly in the short term I've heard they are really quite bad for teeth long term.

oh right i see, didnt know that. Oh well i stick the whitening toothpaste!

Actually, the tooth whitening system that uses a laser is very harsh on the teeth, but the milder bleaching systems that dentists use are better, although you do experience some tooth sensitivity for a day or so after.

The active bleaching ingredient is called Carbamide Peroxide, and comes in gel form, with varying strengths. Most dentist use 22% or 35% strengths, and ask you to apply the gel to a plastic teeth tray which has been previously moulded to your teeth. The results are superb.

Most of the shop bought dental whitening products will contain carbamide peroxide, but in a strength so weak that the bleaching effect on the teeth is minimal.

I know of three friends of mine who have all bought carbamide peroxide 22% gel bleaching kits from some ebayer seller, and I think that they're all happy with the results they've got. I dont know who the seller is, but I imagine that if you were to run a search under 'carbamide peroxide', you'd get something.

Might have a look for some myself now that I'm on the subject. Let me know how you get on, and I'll subscribe to this thread.

My Hygenist told me there is a paste called Beverly Hills that is very good at removing stains from teeth and is less abrasive than the powder types.Haven't tried it yet and have no idea on cost but I will give it a whirl.

thank you ill give it a whirl
I have tried the Beverly Hills toothpaste, and didn't think much of it, mind you, what works for one etc, what I have found to be good, because I used to smoke roll ups, my teeth were very discoloured, is the Macleans with whitening, I use this with an electric tooth brush, and the difference, after a time of course, is very good.
janina toothpaste from good dentists or supermarkets its a paste but works really well. you can use it every day as you would your normal paste.

Hi AliFlump,

If your talking about a bleaching system, for example a gel place inside a guard fitted to the teeth. Then you can get very good results. The kind you buy from boots will be less effective than from a dentist for two main reasons, 1)the concentration of the bleach is lower than that available at the dentist 2)the mouth guard will not fit your teeth accurately.

Problems associated with any form of bleach in a mouth guard system are possible sensitivity of your teeth and gums, and the fact that over time they will fade, unless you top up the bleaching regurlarly. Usually once a month at least.

Whitening toothpastes are entirely different to bleaching systems, they are not generally recommend by dentists since they work purely by abrasion. Whilst they will remove surface staining they will also remove surface enamel ultimately leading to more shine through of the underlying dentine making your teeth appear darker! not whiter.

Commercial tooth whiteners use hydrogen peroxide and
are expensive and inconvenient. A cheap and natural
tooth whitening home remedy uses few strawberries
but certain precautions have to be taken.
