Two areas called brocas area and wernickes area are responsible in the cortex of the brain. Brocas are is responsible for initiating speech and wernickes for understanding of language. These are usually placed in what is called the non-dominant side of the brain. In most people this is the oppoisite side to which we right. Hence most right handed people will be left side dominant and house their speech centres there.
