I'm told I may have to have my tonsils out (I'm 46) because I have a 'pocket' on one tonsil that fills up with old food and becomes smelly and infected an it goes to like a pus......... sorry to be so graphic. Up to now I have been to hosp and they have removed the 'pus' from the pocket and cauterised it so it doesn't fill up again for a few months. They are getting fed up of doing this, but I don't want surgery - so wondered if anyone else had encountered this problem. Thanks in anticipation

You might want to reconsider and go ahead and have the surgery. It is minor surgery, i believe, and would probably give you discomfort for only a couple of days.

The benefits are that you would never again have problems with tonsils and it may prevent you from having more serious problems several years down the road.

personally Id' egt them out. Docs dont' tend to recommend tonsilectomies these days unless considered really necessary. I had mine out at 9, never looked back. After years of anti-bios and time off uni and work, my b/f had his out at 21. Winters are so much better now, no constant illnesses etc. Not sure why you're not keen, I'd rather have it done and forget about it than face constant to and froing for cauterisation etc. and the smell must be utterly disguisting - how do you put up with that? (how do those around you put up with that??) Apart from anything else, it's a pointless, never ending task, so no wonder the nhs want you to get them out.

Hope you feel better soon Dollie.....

I used to suffer terribly with constant throat infections as a child (yellow tonsils, etc.) After having my tonsils removed at 13, things did improve.

Having said that, I have a viral throat infection at the mo', which just doesn't seem to want to clear up!

Do it. I had mine out at 39. Bit sorer afterwards than if I was younger but I haven't had any trouble since (16 years"
So what have you decided Dollie?

I think I'm going to go with it and have the op - bit of a softie really and I've heard some horror stories about having tonsils out in middle age, but nevertheless, its got to be easier than putting up with this. I have an ENT appointment in three weeks where this will be discussed - so yes - I expect I will have them out.

Thanks one and all for sensible advice.

I had my tonsils out when i was 7...my throat hurt after but i got to eat ice cream and jell-o for a week or so...i was happy.

don't worry it's really not bad it's quick and is not unbareable to deal with the pain after...jsut think of a sore throat for a few weeks...you'll be fine and get to eat ice cream and not feel guilty and in my opinion thats brilliant!
