Every now and then when i wake up for what seems to be about 15 seconds i just cannot move my head. Its like i have to really pull it up of the pillow. My eyes are open and i know what going on but i just cannot move my head. Its quite a horrible feeling and when you finally get your head up its such a relief. Does this happen to anyone else or am i just a weirdo ??? If so does anyone know the reason ?

I've had this in the past & was told that it was because I was still in sleep mode. You're right, it's not a very nice feeling, but it's quite a natural thing to happen when you're still only half awake.

Ihave had this for at least 35 years ,there are a numer of names for it ,with me i hear a noise that gets louder and louder then it starts i can not move a muscle but as far as i am concerned i am fully awake ,i have tried to shout out but cannot nor can i as i say move at all .somtimes it is worse than others ,there seems to be a presence in the room that is threatening and there is nothing i can do to stop it ,i know that it is not really happening when i finally able to move but while it is happening i am at the mercy of whatever it is supposed to be in the room i have been dragged from my bed by this and taken on all sorts of trips round my estate or even to outer space everything is incredibly real at the time then it stops and i am in bed covered in sweat and the bed is dripping with sweat .people have this and then go on telly saying that they have been abducted by aliens because it seems so real to them they belive it .there are a number of web sites about this ,if you type in night demons or night terrors you should find it ,in fact i will go and have a look now and find it for you .back soon please excuse spelling

i am back just google night terrors it is all there but better explained than by me of course .i hope this helps.
oh dear jacko's post sounds a bit frightening & extreme. :-(

I have this too sometimes, usually when I'm woken suddenly or in the middle of a dream. I wouldn't worry too much - the more you think of it the more likely you'll notice it because of the anxiety. Take a few deep breaths & tell yourself you'll be fine.

You could try googling 'waking paralysis' but try not to worry - (repeating myself now!) :-)

I'm glad to say, my experiences haven't been quite as drastic as that jacko & after the doc telling me it was due to being semi-comatose, I left it at that.

However, you've got me thinking now, so I'll take a look on the net, cheers!

I get it aswell. Its called sleep paralysis. Basically your brain wakes up before your body does. Alot of it is usually due to lack of sleep.
This is a form of "sleep paralysis" I get that and it can be horrific. Mine is really bad and when it happens it the scariest feeling in the world, I am crying (on the inside0 but cant move, I think there is someone evil in my bedroom and the worst bit is, sometimes you think you have managed to wake up and get up, then you suddenly realise you havent and the whole struggle starts all over again! *shudder* dont think there is anything you can do about it, though mine gets worse if I am stressed.

Cheers guys - Sleep paralysis it is, and dont worry Robina i'm not worrying i just wanted to find out what it was.
Spot on 4get and mycatis.Ther are 3 stages if sleep and usually the mind and body concur. If you are anxious or stressed your body goes into the 2nd stage whilst your mind is still in stage 1 hence the sleeping paralysis. When I first experienced it I was terrified but I can reassure you if you dont fight it and relax (just let it flow over you) you will be out of it in seconds.Easier said than done I know but trust me it works and you cant die from it honestly.Trust me I'm a Dr:)

RedJimmy - I swear your post wasnt there when I replied or I wouldnt have just in case you think I'm a parrot.

Sometimes its slow for an answer to appear.Just ignore mine cos you've got the right attitude.

its called night nurses paralysis its exactly as they describe if Lucifier walked in you cannot move a muscle. Nothing to worry about and it goes when you stop wakening up. Usually happens when something is playing on your mind
Can happen the other way round too. Your body can be moving when your brain is still in dream mode. I often have fights with weird creatures in my room and then wake up and think what am I doing :-)
4get-sure thats not your partner - any excuse eh - I did it it my sleep officer - honest:)

I wouldnt call him a strange creature no drisgirl.

And its strange Drisgirl because I have never done it when I've shared a bed with anyone else. So I have never been able to prove it. :-)

You're preaching to the converted 4getmenot.I was only being lighthearted about a situation we both have experienced.

If you didnt laugh you would cry at times:)

I think this also might be called hag phenomena, just came across the term on a medical quiz on sheppardsoftware.com
