I think i have a verrucca on my foot and that it may have been there a while. If i ignored it would it eventually "grow out" or do i have to treat it asap for fear of it getting worse?

Verucca's are infectious, so its best to get it treated, or you could do it yourself, there are various remedies in the chemists, having said that, if your not sure, it could also be a corn, again, you can get the tratment from the chemists, but you need to be sure of what it is first.

I remeber having a veruca when I was about 10, but didn't want to tell my Mum because I thought I would get told off (I have no idea why). I used to lie awake, picking at it, and then one day I picked it entirely out, and it left a small crater in my foot that eventually healed over. Disgusting, unhelpful and not something I would recommend, but I couldn't stop myself typing the story

Veruccas, as Lonnie points out, are infectious, and are caused by a virus. The current recommendation is that you leave well alone as your body will fight the virus and build up immunity - thus no more veruccas. I worked in a school where the whole policy of veruccas was changed for this reason. If the children caught them then it was considered that it was best to leave alone in order to protect the child from further outbreaks. Even the footbath at the swimming pool was abandoned. This was a directive from the Area Health Authority.

However, if the verucca is painful and causing you a problem then obviously it needs to be treated.

I treated a couple with over the counter remedies for ages and ages til I got fed up and left them alone (although they could be quite sore cos get hard) and they disappeared eventually. I'm currently trying to get my mum to do the 'duct tape' method, but she's picked and made hers all manky at the mo, so when it's all better again we're gonna trying whacking some tape on for a few weeks at a time. Apparently it might work by stopping air getting in, but there are some theories it might be something in the glue... And where did I discover this knowledge-why t'internet of course...christ knows whether it'll work but it'll be cheaper and less hassle than all that rubbish from chemists.

About 14/15 years ago I suffered from verrucca's and the ointments that the doctor made me put on absolutely stung like mad. I was about 8 years old and Id had a particularly painful one for over a month, (yes just like supernick I picked it too YUK! and we used to have swimming on a Friday at junior school. I remember the head master telling my mum to try putting clear nail varnish over it instead of the ointments as this would help heal it and I could also (apparently) go swimming without wearing the dreaded Verrucca sock. Although I wouldn't recommend that now, funnily enough after a week or so it finally went away!

It probably won't go away without treatment but did you know that Scotchgard Duct Tape is a good treatment for the removal of warts and verruccas? Honestly !!

check out the following website:

Whoops - this leads to the wrong site but try Googling Verruccas, Warts and Duct Tape

That link didn't work Wendy, but I've amended the address & here it is:

Very interesting - we do a lot of swimming, so I've printed it out for the medicine cupboard, just in case any of us ever catch Verruccas!

Well warts anyway, he, he!

My daughter had one and that bazooka etc are just lightweight treatment.

She had to go to the nurse every week for weeks to have it burnt out and it worked and wasnt too painful (only really at the time) .Its a cold freeze but I cant remember for the life of me what its called.

Sorry, pressed the wrong button...

I was about to say, the only over the counter treatment that I found worked for me was Wartner. It's quite expensive - about 12, but it freezes the wart/verrucca and eventually the thing will go. It's a lot easier to use than any of those liquid/gel applications and far more effective.

my daughter had one , took her to to the docs (cos I didnt know what it was) the doc gave me all this gumph, and at the end of it I read that if you let it go of its own accord she would not get re-infected. I gave her no treatment for it and it went..... she has never had another x

My son had a verrucca, I kept it clean and after a few weeks it fell off. I did not use any treatment, just the basics, he did not complain...
