if the plate are mouldy then its probably not good but a bit of dried pasta sauce or something is fine because its dry.
i live alone and have to let them pile up a bit in order to fill the dishwasher - a real waste otherwise.
i had an old cheese grater, given to me when i was a student. It was a good one but very rusty. Anyway, I dropped it behind a cupboard full of cheese, and there it stayed for months. I could see it but couldn't get at it. I could see that after a few weeks it was covered in green fur and it actually used to scare me!
Eventually, when | moved the big cupboard was pulled out and for some reason, I decided not to throw the grater away. Amazingly, after one wash it was as shiny as a brand new one! It's still going strong and had never lost it's shine.
Don't really know what my point is though..........
