Yep, i know what your on about. Apparently its becuase i was grinding and clenching my teeth in my sleep.I was referred to a dentist at the hospital who made me a retainer to wear at night and its all better now.

Are you aware that you have been grinding or clenching your teeth whilst you sleep, or has anyone told you that you do? I had a similar problem with my jaw & mentioned to my dentist. I was sent to see an Orthodontic specialist at the hospital & they fitted me out with a tooth shield that looks like something boxers would wear (v attractive - not!).

After wearing for several weeks (only when sleeping!!) it did the trick by discoraging me to bite down when I was sleeping & allowing the ligament that was ceasing up to relax again. I Have only had to go back to it on a couple of occasions to break the habit again, but don't have any real problems now.

I am sure your GP can refer, you in the same way as my dentist did, if this is the problem.

Good luck.

fideldyfee beat me to it...must have posted whilst I was typing my novel !!

I had a dislocated jaw when I was young (got punched in the face) and it often locks up again (especially after a visit to the dentist). I always get a horrible 'crunchy' sound when I eat. I also grind my teeth and it doesn't help at all.

Try gentle massaging your jaw and take an anti inflammatory painkiller (Ibuprufen) The Ibuprufen will help with any swelling as well as giving you pain relief. You could also try an icepack (or frozen peas wrapped in a towel) on the area for ten minutes. This will reduce inflammation.

Try not to worry, I don't think it is serious and

Seems everybody posted together!!

Sorry my first answer seemed to post itself before I had finished and I have now forgotten what I was going to say.

Good luck.
