In this day and age when GPs do not do house calls anymore, is it still necessary to change GPs if you only move a matter of miles away, but under a different council ?

I'd suggest telephoning your surgery to check whether you remain within their catchment area.

You can ask your GP to keep you on the books, however, if you are too far outside your GP's catchment area they may suggest you move to a nearer doctor.

You can call NHS direct to find GP surgeries near you.

You should, in any case, advise the local FPC of your move. If you don't tell them then your prescriptions will have the wrong address on them and it may affect you if you need a hospital appointment as they require evidence of identity and UK residency before giving outpatient treatment these days.

I've lived in Suffolk for 16 years and I'm still registered with a doctor in Sheffield so I don't think a couple of miles would be a problem!

I moved back south from Yorkshire last year and received a letter from my GP up north advising me that I was no longer on their books as a result. Not a problem as I'd already made enquiries at a local practice.
