I am not being flippant but maybe that's just the way you are - lugubrious.

Alcohol is recognised as being a depressant though.

If you think you are clinically depressed, first stop is your GP.

Learn to ride a motorbike.

I'm not joking... anything like that where you can find a faternity of people is good.

I have never been in your position but, when i learnt to ride years ago i felt so much freer.. i met loads of awesome friends and (although it may sound sad) it became a big part of my life.

Depression is a state of mind more then anything else. So to combat it you need to forget it. Give yourself summin to do and be involved with.

I agree with the last person about finding an interest, but it can be very difficult to actually do it if you feel so fed up all the time. This health supplement is supposed to be very good for depression - called Veg EPA - it has had some very good testimonials. It is a mixture of extremely pure fish oil, and evening primrose oil. I think it takes 3 months to be really fully effective, but you may feel some benefit after a few weeks. Put 'VegEPA' into google - the site you are looking for is called 'Igennus' and click on 'testimonials'. Also, alcohol is a depressant, and so maybe you should try to avoid it altogether, at least for a while. Hope this helps.

There is also a book by Prof. Basant Puri (of the Hammersmith Hospital) which tells you how best to use VegEPA to combat Depression.

It is called 'The Natural Way to Beat Depression: The Groundbreaking Discovery of EPA to Successfully Conquer Depression' Here is the link on Amazon:

If you want to buy some, Igennus sell it at a reasonable price, but a company called 1st Vitality sell it the cheapest I've seen when bought in bulk. Also two people sell it on ebay - the cheapest way to get it if you only want 1 or 2 tubs.

I've got M.E. and it has been a Godsend, truly.

Hello A book that is very highly recommended is called Feeling Good by doctor David Burns. He says that depression is caused by automatic negative thoughts which originate in childhood and which are irrational. It requires a lot of work but you should soon begin to see results and he says this is far better than relying on drugs. You may dismiss this book at the beginning but when you get into it and stick with it in the most cases (80 percent) he claims do get permanently better. It is really cognitive behavioral therapy(CBT) good luck

first, beware of who you socalise with. because to me, in your case it seems to be encouraging you to turn into an alcoholic. besides drinking, what do you like doing. i'm sure you must enjoy doing something. find a hobby and loose yourself in it. also taking long walks relaxes the mind and hopefully you might see things clearer. take up dancing or enroll in a cooking class. join a book club. some of us, when we have too much free time, we get bored and call that depression.

it's all in the mind. if you believe you are depressed, then ask yourself, why are you depress? what's making you depress? if you are able to answer those questions then you can help yourself overcome your problem.

if all else fail, then get a jar and each time you take a drink put 5 quids in the jar. if you stay true to it, you will see how fast you depression / drinking disappears.

CBT as JJaammeess refers to is actually the recommended treatment for depression before prescribing antidepressants. The clinical guidelines for treatment of Depression I think says you have to be offered so many sessions. If you google Cognitive behaviour Therapy there are lots of sites with free self help sessions. Good Luck

Hey.i have went throught severe depression.i found the best thing was therapy.my advice is to not touch any anti depressants.from my experience they dull out and prolong the problem.the best thing to do is sort it out in your head.no drugs or anything else can help your state of mind.like a few have suggested a hobby is ideal.find interests.a book i found extremely helpful was "the road less travelled" by M scott peck.hope this helps
