Clubfoot is a common birth defect. In a child with clubfoot, one or both feet are in a twisted position which cannot be turned back to a normal position. Clubfoot includes a variety of foot deformities. A person with clubfoot appears to walk on his ankle and the outside or inside edge of his foot. The exact cause of the condition has been debated for centuries and is still not clearly understood. Some feel that clubfoot is due to a temporary halt in the development of the foot, probably during the first eight or nine weeks of pregnancy. Heredity may also be considered. Some studies have indicated that a higher number of sons and daughters have parents that have/had clubfoot. Sometimes other conditions such as hand deformities, spina bifida, and congenital hip dislocations are also present
A girl in the same ward as me gave birth to a baby boy who had a club foot. He went on to have this corrected with no further problems.
