Can anyone help? I am a chronic insomniac, 70 yrs old, always had problems sleeping, it`s not old age! I have been taking Nytol [diphenhydamine hydrochloride 25mg]
I am sleeping like a baby for the first time ever. BUT the pharmasists say this tablet will damage my liver over a period of time as I also take statins. I checked with my Dr. who said they are harmless and carry on taking them, but still the pharmasists say no! Who do I believe????????/

i doubt it - nytol are totally herbal arent they? i take them have been for 5 years!! dont seem to have any problems,
I would just be worried about getting dependant on them to get to sleep. Can you get access to an insomnia specialist for advice?

These are not the herbal ones, they`re behind the counter and are supposed to be used for a fortnight only in case of dependency, but at my age why worry!

70 isn't old these days Nita

Maizie, thank you so much, that website was really useful. I`m going to believe my Dr.

mazie, sorry, spelt your name wrong xx
i did a research project in insomnia and meds for it - both over the counter and prescribed..and i looked at non-pharmacological interventions - things like reading etc..

diphenhydramine hydrochloride is cautioned in the use of hepatic (liver) impairment..statins do much of their work in the liver, so it is possible that they might have a negative effect on each other.. but there is no contra-indications or warnings about the two together. i suggest you continue on the diphenhydramine hydrochloride if its working, but if you are worried or even just for reassurance ask your GP for liver function bloods every 6 months to monitor your liver..they may say its unnecessary, but if it will ease any concern then they should have no problem in doing it! and besides it doesn't cost them much to do it!

hope that helps.
