Being one of the speccy four eyed brigade I have been considering maybe, possibly, getting this treatment. But I would like to know if anyone out there has first hand experience of this....is it painful (I'm a wimp) or is it as good as the adverts say??

I am also considering it - you go first and let me know!

A colleague of mine was "fixed" recently and has 20/15 vision now so it was quite a result (Lasik treatment). It was six weeks ago and he still hets some halo-ing around point light sources but this has been fading. He said his eyes were very dry and the urge to rub his eyes was almost unbearable for the first few days but on the whole he would recommend it. The Optometrist [spelling?] said the halo-ing would fade over the next few months and his eyes no longer itch. I'm waiting for his 1 year anniversary to see what it's like before deciding.
I know that Mylene from Hearsay and Lorraine Kelly from GMTV have had it done and reccommend it. As soon as I have enough money I'm definitely going tp have it done.
The operation can over correct and you can be left long/short sighted (whichever is the opposite of what you are now), meaning that you will still have to wear glasses. Also after the operation, if your eyes change again, you may need to have glasses. However don't let this put you off, do let us know how it goes if you decide to have it done
I saw the operatoin on richard&judy the other day .The laser locks on to the eye ,it only took 3 or 4 minutes. They said that the eyes would itch for a few days, but eye drops would be used .The main drawback is the cost.
Agree with 5029. Also they don't work on the eye lens but reshape the curvature of the cornea (the transparent eyeshell which actually does more 'seeing' than the lens BION)

I've been considering getting it done for a while but like 5029 I've heard stories about it not working 100%. I hate wearing specs and prefer to wear my contact lenses whenever I'm out of the house. I'd be really p'd off if after the operation I had to carry glasses around with me for reading, driving, etc. However, I'd like to nominate sft42 as the official AB guinea pig and please let us know how you get on. See you later!

So this means i'm now the site's offical biggest flirt, recruitment officer AND guinea pig. It's a hard life!!
Have you - on your visits to opticians - ever noticed how many of them wear glasses? And, of those who don't, we can't tell how many may be wearing contacts. If laser treatment were as safe and successful as it's cracked up to be by some people, don't you think every optician would have it done?

AAhhh QM this is simply to show off the nice styles of frames that they sell, a friend of mine who worked in Vision Express said that they were "asked" to wear frames with plain glass if they didn't need glasses just to show off the newest styles, so it's very much like going to the BMW showroom they don 't ride bikes do they???
I'm certainly not saying you're wrong, Sft, but it strikes me as improbable that qualified professional people - ophthalmologists, as opposed to the counter-assistants - would permit themselves to be used as "walkin', talkin' mannequins", especially given that the shop they work in is already festooned with hundreds of the frames they want to sell and which customers are free to try on and see how they themelves look in them! Perhaps somewhere on the WWW there's a photograph taken at a conference of opticians - ie where there are no customers to impress. I'd be prepared to bet lots of those attending would be wearing glasses. Consequently, I'd still advise the questioner to "Ca' canny!" (For those of you who aren't Sft, that's "Be careful!" for Scots.)
