It is a condition where someone has two or more chronic lung conditions at the same time eg asthma and emphysema. It is treated mainly with steroids and bronchodilators to ease breathing. It can be exacerbated (made worse) by smoking and also means the sufferer is much more prone to chest infections. more info here:

Hi Carol, my mother-in-law has copd, caused by heavy smoking and has been admited to hospital several times to have emergency oxygen therapy etc. This was because she refused to accept anything was wrong, including heart failure and, without doubt, she is very frightened.
The gp surgery runs a very good copd clinic and it has taken lots of support and persuasion to get her to attend.
What frightens me is the fact that my partner is a smoker, and yet lots of his very close blood relatives have emphysema and the like from smoking.
I wish you both the very best, and appologies if this is a rant....
