If you ask someone a question and you get the reply 'I don't have to explain myself to you or anyone' do you think they are guilty of something?

If he wanted to speak to her then he should have said its more that if he is again he's broken that promise.
people are allowed to talk or not talk to anyone they want, so he's right on that score, he doesn't have to explain himself to anyone. Equally, your mate does have reasonable grounds for suspicion if he won't talk about something that concerns the two of them. Her move next; she has to decide whether to trust him or not - and it sounds like she doesn't. No relationship can last long without trust, and it doesn't matter who does or doesn't do the trusting.
