There's growing evidence that human diet evolved according to location, climate etc - and that many humans existed on a largely vegetarian diet, while others, on other parts of the planet were largely carnivorous. There's a supposed link between the evolution of the diet, the digestive system and blood type (different blood types being better suited to distributing different chemicals around the body).
Not exactly a definitive answer, but pretty interesting.
