I discovered after seeing a single magpie on the way home, I am worse than I thought, why you ask - well because I was sat at a set of traffic lights when I saw it and tried my hardest to salute it without anyone seeing or laughing at me.

My sister is worse will only leave through the door she came in, wierdo!

My daughter salutes magpies, it must be a regional thing, cos I never heard of it until a few years ago.
Question Author
Do you salute them too now?
Who cares what other people think :)

I don't believe in this kind of stuff. I think we believe in this sort of thing to create more meaning in our lives. If you see a magpie, then expect bad luck, then you're focusing on bad luck so when something coincidentally happens which is unlucky or "bad", this belief is strengthened. You probably didn't think about positives.

true and maybe when I next see one on it's own I shall keeps my hands firm on the wheel. Never thought of it that way.

I never cut my nails on a sunday, heard it was bad luck.

I havn't ever saluted magpies in 50 years, my family have never heard of it either, we grew up on a farm and had magpies around but never did saluting them crop up. it must be a modern trendy superstition, after all, what bad lucj can a bird bring (unless it is an albatross of course)

Im not superstitous at all.

But one thing. When Im in a show, I like to have a routine. shower, vocals, hair, makeup, stretch, drink water, pray,*showtime*!!

and if my order gets interrupted, I get a little superstitious that the show won't go as smooth as it should ;)

dancealot13 - would you knowingly walk under a ladder backstage?

lol yeah I would if it was in my way, and It wouldnt freak me out.

what about you? Would you open an umbrella in the house? lol ;)

Not unless there was a leak in my roof!!!!
I always salute magpies. And say "good morning" Mr Magpie
not magpies but blackbirds scare me...my mothere always said if a blackbird flies into your window there will be a death....it has happened a few times in my lifetime and always came true so i really hate that one.

A very sensible answer from Tha-Flash. My feelings exactly.

And at last, on a similar strange belief, the UFO suggested sightings have been knocked on the head.

I am sooooo superstitious and I have this thing about drain. If you walk over one then you make a wish. If you walk over 2 in a row then its good luck. If you walk over three then its bad luck and you have to say 'Bread and Butter' 3 times! F*ck knows why! I have done it for years and years! I will say 'Bread and Butter' whilst I am alone walking down the street. I will also visably try and avoid walking over all 3. Lol

I am not superstitous at all, and nothing bad has happened to me for ages and i dont think ever will again.

Touches wood for good luck!!!

;o)

Im sure I told this story on here before but here goes again. I am in no way superstitious and one day walking home from town I saw a ladder across the pavement and my mate was coming the other way. Well I just walked under it and my mate waited for all the traffic to go past until he could walk around it. Fair enough that may have bought him luck if hed been around long enough to see it, he killed himself that night.
I am 8 months pregnant, and my superstitions won't let me have the pram or the cot in the house until baby is born (well a fortnight before just incase she's early).

Also won't let anyone kill a spider in my house, even though I'm not particularly keen on them.

Out of interest, how do you salute a magpie? I've heard people say "will you break my sorrow' when they've see a magpie, but never a salute.
Question Author
I always salute like saluting an army person and say good morning/afternoon mr magpie!! I was starting to think I'm barmy, but with the blackbirds and drains I feel now I am in good company.

Normally I would have said I'm not at all superstious, but reading your question I realise whenever I see one magpie I always look for another, as don't the say 'one for sorrow, two for joy, three for a girl and four for a boy'?

The other thing that I am superstitous about is, a bride should never try on her complete wedding outfit (altogether) before the wedding, or put on her wedding jewellery altogether as it brings bad luck for the marriage.
