Last week i was pretty ill with some kind of gastric infection/bug. I went to the Dr's and he did a blood test for my pancreas, kidneys and liver.

All the tests have come back fine apart from liver function which was a bit high.....this was expected as i enjoy a beer or 5.

But i asked the quack to do a cholesteral and blood glucose test as he had the needle already in my arm....i hadn't eaten for over 12 hours either.

Surprisingly, the cholesteral came back at 5.3, which i'm told is ok. The glucose was good too.

The Dr didn't really give any other info......is 5.3 ok ?

mine was 5 and the dr told me it was a bit high

Hi hammerman, 5.mml/l is the normal level. Mine was 7.5mml several months back. I bought Flora marg, and drinks, just 1 daily and it came down to 4.2mml. Tesco and Asda do their own brand of low chol drinks, yogurts etc, also eat oats, walnuts and generally try to keep to fat free foods.Good luck.
Mine was 5.6 last week when I had to go for an MOT...I'm not sure what the level is supposed to be but, I got a pep talk about drinking and smoking and have been put on Statins !
I was most annoyed as I have lost weight ..which he asked me to do ,I have forgotten what alcohol tastes like and I am desperately trying to give up the fags.In fact ..I was so annoyed I had a cake on the way home !!
Putting you on statins was a bit drastic Shaneystar. Mine was much higher than yours but the doc told me to buy all pro biotic stuff (See above) and my levels came down nicely. My friend is a size 10,not over weight yet her chol levels were 6.2mml so being overweight does'nt always apply. The normal level shoul be 5mml.
I think it's a bit drastic too Fina ! Still..I am taking them and have to go back in three months. This could have happened because I put on so much weight with the thyroid problem ..but that is sorted now and the weight has dropped off. I think it's an inherited thing you know.
We had this discussion in another thread recently. A friend of mine who is stick thin and eats fresh air has really high levels and her husband who is an inveterate pie eater has normal levels !

Level mmol/L Interpretation
This is a recognised cholesterol level indicator

<5.2 Desirable level corresponding to lower risk for heart disease

5.2 - 6.2 Borderline high risk

>6.2 High risk

Like most of us it would be nice to be lower(say towards 4) but as you can see hammerman you are in pretty good cholesterol shape.

I should state that I am not a doctor and the levels I quoted are guidelines put out by the American Heart Association.
