Hi ya

My woofie has got hip displacer and he never had any ops. He's 11 now and he's had a normal life as any. I'm sure urs will be fine! xxx

Blond...there are varying degrees of hip dysplasia and vets won't operate unless it's necessary, your dog was obviously one of the lucky ones.
Kerry, most dogs make a good recovery after these ops and live good lives, it's definitely better to get the op done than not if you have been advised to do so by your vet. He will probably develop arthritis in his hips in later life but with anti-inflammatory pills/drops when this arrives he will do fine!
It's very unfortunate that your puppy has such a severe case of hip dysplasia at such a young age. If he is having a total hip replacement then he'll need to have cage rest for 6 to 8 weeks after the op, although he should be able to walk on it almost straight away. Most dogs will be back to normal activities within 2months, with common sense on your part. Im concerned that you were sold a puppy like this, you should contact the breeder to let them know. If they are knowingly selling puppies with such bad problems, they need to be stopped! Im sure everything will be fine for you and your dog. You'd be surprised how well they cope with these things!

What a shame such a young puppy has to go through this horrendous surgery. If you carefully follow the advice regarding rest and treatment then I am sure at this age his body will learn to cope.

Without causing kipchick to have a coronary, can I ask whether the parents were hip scored and was the puppy registered? I hope the breeder has been informed and you might even consider getting in touch with Trading Standards, because the puppy you have been sold is not fit for the purpose for which you bought it, i.e. living a nomal life as a family pet. If they are allowed to keep on breeding from the parents then other dogs and families will suffer as you are.

Just to add (for the masses) that in breeds with these problems that even if the parents are hip scored it doesn't necessarily mean that the puppies will have good hips scores although there is a better chance if the parents have a good hip score. If you are going to buy a breed that has hip dysplasia problems you need to get advice from a vet regarding what the numbers on the scoring mean and your breeder should inform you that the puppies could still get a worse hip score than the parents.
Kerry if you weren't told any of this by the breeder or the parents weren't hip scored and the puppy is kennel club registered then you need to let the KC know. If the puppy is not not KC registered and the breeder did not let you know any of this then I don't think you can get much done about it.
P.S just out of interest...how are his elbows?? Labs can get elbow dysplasia too, unfortunately.
Oooohhh the pain is intense,,,,,,,,,,,no actually lankeela i agree totally, mentioning no names,a certain 'breeder' we know will mate any dog with any bitch, and if you could see the damage in them pups, the trouble they have as they grow it makes you sick,,,,,Yes we have reported it,,,several times!!

hi thanks for all your answers back diesle (my pup) only started haveing trouble just over 2 weeks ago and i took him to see my vet who xrayed him and said he would have to be referred down to a specilist for hip surgery i have contacted the breeder who i bought him from as i paid 450 for him and he is pedigreed and kc registered his mum and dad are both hip scored but as the vet says it doesnt mean diesle hips would be fine. i take him down next week to see specialist again before his op i just cant wait for this mess to be over and have diesle back to a normal playfull pup

So sorry to hear your problems kerry. Were the hip x-rays sent away to be scored? If they were the results will be published in the Kennel Club's Breed Record Supplement. Were the parents hip scores put on the registration certificate? Only asking because 450 is not cheap to pay for a lab, and you would expect to get a reasonable one for that money. Although I agree that low hip score parents cannot guarantee anything (it is still not known how much is down to environmental conditions) at least if the parents had low scores then the breeder is not to blame.

Hope it all goes well and he is back home soon and on the road to recovery.
