I want to dye my hair but I've heard that it's best to do it when you're hair is dirty, as the colour holds better. I work in a hot caf and am in and out of the kitchen all day, which leaves my hair quite greasy. Would this be a good time to dye it or not? It would definitely be dirty but would it hold when my hair is like that? Thanks for the help =)

P.S anyone know a good colour care shampoo/conditioner/intensive conditioner that smells lush? : P

Im not sure, but I imagine if your hair is greasy then the dye would just sit on top of the grease rather than penetrate your hair. I usually wash mine the night before I dye it and it usually works ok
my hairdresser tells me to leave it dirty as it does penetrate better and also lessens the damage to your hair throuth dyes...so aka pixie and i have really not helped with our different opinions and ive prob confuesed you now!! xx also tigi bedhead shampoo and conditioner is great but a bit pricey xxx i guess youd better speak to your hairdresser about whether to leave your hair dirty or clean xx
I always thought it was best to dye it when it was idrty, I usually do mine a day after I have washed it. I would say it depends on your hair type, if the hair gets greasy when dirty then I would have thought that the dye may not absorb so well but then the same could be said if you have recently washed it then the shampoo/ conditioner may not absorb the dye so well? Probably best to speak with a hairdresser who will tell you the best for your hair type.
my advice would be to leave it for a day after washing but don't let it get too greasy.
I always wash my hair before I dye it and put the dye on when it is nearly dry. But dont use conditioner just before you put dye on or it wont work, shampoo only
if you are dying with a permenant colour then don't wash it, if it is a semi permenant, then always give it one shampoo first.

Most of the hair colourants in the shops have got ammonia in it to some degree and that cuts straight thru dirt, grease, hairspray etc...

The reason why you shouldn't shampoo and condition your hair prior to it is because it'll leave a protective coating on your hair which the hair colour can't bond as well to.

I never wash my hair prior and I never wet my hair either even if it says on the packet that I have to. Never had any probs and I have been dying my hair for over 14 years

I usually dye my hair after first washing it, check the

instructions whether or not your particular dye is applied on to wet or dry hair. If your hair is clean & free of any styling products, it will give the best possible results.

great, lots of nice contradictory advice! cheers guys! keep it coming tho..

p.s. any hairdressers out there :P

I ask myself this very same question but usually always dye my hair the day after I wash it. Just as long as it's not TOO greasy because this will cause the color not to take.
