It also contains sodium benzoate - http://www.encyclopedia.com/html/s/sodiumbe.as p
One or two cans a day won't harm you - but there is no nutritional benefit in them whatsoever.
The diuretic affect means it does not hydrate your body in the way plain water will.

Google "Dangers of Aspartame".......when I started work at a contract research lab, they showed us a video about the dangers of Aspartame...it was to show us what can happen if testing is not carried out properly or to an adequate standard. I would never let my kids drink juice with aspartame in it, and would certainly never, ever drink it myself if I was pregnant. It's not just fizzy drinks...it's a sweetener used in millions of products world wide...lots of things labelled "diet" are likely to have it in it. I think it's a scandal that it's still so widely used today.
I remember hearing on the news quite a while ago (maybe within the last couple of years?) that Diet Coke is worse for you than normal Coke. I can't remember why though, sorry. I am addicted to the normal Coke (that's Coca Cola, before anyone jokes that I am a coke addict!) and drink 3 or 4 cans each day which is awful I know. There was also an article in the local paper last year about a girl who drank 12 cans of Coke every single day. I thought I was bad, but that was quite shocking!
Well I'm currently working for Coca-Cola and I never touch the stuff! hahahahaha! Wouldn't drink Coke for anything. As far as I'm concerned anything which contains sugar or substitutes or additives is bad for you. And it's the additives that you need to worry about, as we still don't know the longterm effects of most of them.
In the office here we get free drinks all day, but I only ever drink the Malvern Spring or the Appletise, which are both sugar and additive free.

Oh yes it is kick !
One night I woke up with a raging thirst so I wandered downstairs and downed a cold Iron-Bru in about 10 seconds. When I eventually recovered from the belching and got back to sleep, the NIGHTMARES were horrendous. Just pour some into a glass and hold it up to the light - it is positively iridescent with chemicals.
Only Vimto is worse. Stick to Budweiser, reliably honestly brewed (in million gallon vats at Milton Keynes)

I don't know how bad diet anything is for you - they all contain aspartame and I have some genetic 'quirk' (shared with my mother, sister and son) that aspartame tastes 'bitter' and leaves a nasty after taste so I can't drink it. You know those adverts where they say you can't tell the difference between diet and ordinary coke... well I can every time!
