I think what made me gag was the smell of the actual mask RUBBER! yuk it made me ill just to think about it.
It wasn't until I was a teenager that I learnt that the school dentist(s) were in fact dental failures in that profession, well lets say they had scraped past their exams!
And rather than turf them out, they were put to use for school children.....crazy when you think about it....the time when you should have the best treatment and dental care and they foisted you with these plebs!
That is now in the past, thank goodness and your regular qualified dentist sees children as well as adults.
It wasn't just the masks that were "gestapo" when those butchers got you in that chair!!

i am terrified of the dentist..i think i have a fear of pain. not anywhere else but my mouth though, odd! neways something that helped me was getting a new fit italian looking) dentist =D i'm still scared stiff but now when i go i shut my eyes n listen to his accent. failing actually having a fine dentist i suppose you could always ask him to wear a mask of someone hot and tell him it helps to relax you, therefore making his job easier!
