They have the same effect as a bra does for women. If i don't wear pants, my ankles get very bruised and i keep tripping over !!!

as in the pants dotty is referring to or as in underwear? if the latter, to reduce the chance of getting in a painful position with their zip (tight pants only) and for women so that when wearing skirts a gust of wind won't be even more embarrasing, and for both genders to keep their nether regions warm in cold weather
