I think the reality of life for most of us is that 90% of it is a pretty routine affair - work, shopping, household chores, punctuated by 10% of exciting activities like holidays and social events.
I suspect the secret of enjoying life is to lead a fulfilling one rather than an exciting one, getting as much pleasure as possible from the little things we do.
I'm a keen gardener and a keen reader. I am also a lousy musician. I get a great deal of pleasure from reading a really entertaining book, and an enormous thrill watching my first seeds germinate, and picking my first tomato, my first cucumber, my first courgtette. I also enjoy sitting down and frustratingly playing my way through a rusty piece of music. Exciting - probably not, but fulfilling, certainly. And spotting a rare bird coming to my bird table definitely counts as exciting in my book.
