Am interested to know other female's views on this one: last night on the Dragons Den a lady had a loo-seat cover for public lavs. She said that going to public toilets was one of the most horrendous, filthy and disgusting things she has to do.

OK, we have all had experiences of nasty loos which I do avoid but these days they are mostly pretty clean. I am aware that lots of women have aversions to other people's or public loos but I don't cover the seat and I don't hover - does that make me a minger?

To clarify, the woman had 2 separate covers she was marketing - a furry one to keep you warm at home in the night and individually wrapped ones for public toilets. The main drawback being that because of the elastic, they were not disposable so you would in theory have to remove them, walk out of the toilet with them then put them in the bin (or maybe use the sanitary towel bin I guess if there is one) I am a hoverer or if necessary, cover the seat with toilet paper to sit down. I wash my hands but then worry about touching the door handle on the way out because whoever last opened it may not have!

Well well well I hover all the time (for a number1only of course) even on one toilet at home as it is such a disgusting toliet - it is a very old toliet with and old seat and lid which as it is rental property cannot be changed for a new one, as you have to ask permission of the landlord that lives abroad and all this rubbish. I clean it constantly but is still stinks of p**s.

I now hover so often my bladder has adjusted to it and so it is as easly as sitting down.

Everyone to their own with this one. But yes the taps are a problem for me along with the toliet flush, the cubical lock/handle, even the outside door as they make you push it to get in with clean hands but....have to use the handle to leave how stupid - Im going to use that as a new thread!

did you know that women shouldnt hover over a loo seat? it prevents all the pee being released and can cause cystitis and eventually kidney problems.
Being pregnant i cant avoid going in public loos but i know where the cleanest ones are and use them!

sunflower68, I carry a small pack of wetwipes and a small pack of tissues. I always use a wetwipe to wipe the seat and dry it off with toilet paper. When I flush I always use toilet paper, never touch the handle - then I wash my hands and turn the taps off again with paper. But mainly I do try not to use public loos. If I do need to, I try and go to either supermarkets, department stores or food outlets like McDonalds where they are inspected and cleaned hourly. Why is it we have such disgusting toilets in this country?

Correction if it clean of course I will use it but most often aren't, if you had seen the toilet seats ive seen, you would hover, alot of the toilets I use dont even have seats, they are metal unbreakable things which are terrible.

It is a shame that public toilets in the UK do not have the disposable seat covers that (almost) all toilets in USA have.
Bio-degradable they flush down the loo after use. Shaped like a large toilet seat with a perforated type middle, they are placed over said toilet (either the seat - if there is one!) or the china bowl. Peeing or c******g goes straight through the "hole" in the cover, and the weight of the p or c takes it down to be flushed away.

I always lift the lid of the loo (public) and squat on the bowl having first lined it with toilet tissue.

With reference to using a store toilet, as apposed to a public convenience, is the better choice as usually they have to be checked/cleaned every hour or so. Washing my hands in Sainsburys once, a woman who had obviously just "parked her breakfast", came from the toilet, walked straight out of the door, in front of me. OK I thought maybe she will wash her hands when she gets home. Lordy, Lordy, NO!! She walked into the food hall, over to the fruit and started messing with the apples!

Reminds me of a holiday I once took in Russia years ago. I took a packet of paper loo seat covers with me because a Russian friend had told me all their public toilets were absolutely disgusting - which they were. But I never had a chance to use the paper covers - all the loo seats had already been nicked !

Nope, still puzzled. Why use tissue paper to touch the handle? Surely you are about to wash your hands anyway.

Also I would hate to sit on anything but the seat; underneath it it is likely to have more wee-drips, surely, and I ain't gonna wipe anyone's wee up. I think I am trying to say that putting the back of my thighs onto a toilet seat is far more preferable than doing any wiping of seats.

I certainly would not use a dirty looking seat or loo but do not wipe seats that look perfectly clean, and I always wash my hands.

A much used toilet seat harbours more germs than the china bowl part that the majority of people do not sit on. Putting paper on this part (extra safeguard), is preferable to the "warm" seat.

A girl that worked at a company I temped at once, (who was of ethnic origin - racial issues on AB are taboo - and, I hasten to add not what this comment is about), told me that she only washed one of her hands (religion), as one was used for personal hygiene and the other for eating.
I never dared to eat the biscuits she offered from the tin (shared in the office) after hearing that. She also told me (very friendly girl, got on really well), that because of their religion etc the females of her country, will hitch up their dress (again, I will not state the type of dress), and stand (in a crouching position), on the public toilet seats, as it is forbidden for them to sit down!
