Why does the cutting off of split ends actually do to the remaining hair? Does it make it stronger? Does it help it grow quicker?

And, knowing a few hairdressers, I can confidently say that the only reason they tell you to get it trimmed every 6 weeks is to make money!
Lol, I know electricblue, I fell for that for years until I started living with some girls in the trade. I used to think that my hair felt so great after it was cut because my hair was healthier etc but really it was because they double wash your hair at a salon, use products that contain less soap than the stuff you usually have a home, and they have glossed and shined and smoothed the folicals within an inch of thier life! Granted that losing the dead ends makes it feels smoother because the dead, dry hair has gone, but if you really want to grow your hair, not cutting it every six weeks will do it!
It just makes it look nicer. It also makes it a bit less prone to static as there are fewer of those split bits that poke out and catch on cardis, cushions etc. It doesn't make it stronger or grow faster but, in the case of long hair, split ends don;t add much to the length, they just make what length you have look untidy. Or so a hairdresser told me. that's my experience, though, it does feel better to have a regular trim, even if I do it.
